David Corenswet is set to take on a challenging new role in the upcoming biopic “Mr. Irrelevant,” where he portrays the late John Tuggle, an NFL running back known for being the last pick in the 1983 draft. This film, directed by Jonathan Levine and co-starring Isabel May, Michael Shannon, and David Krumholtz, will be released in UK cinemas on 25 December 2023.

In preparing for this demanding role, Corenswet faced a significant physical transformation that tested his limits. The 33-year-old actor shared insights into his rigorous training regimen during a promotional event in New York City on 5 October. He detailed how his commitment to authenticity led him to endure shin splints throughout the filming process. “It was quite tough,” he explained. “I had some experience from my previous role as Superman, which helped me with the weight gain necessary to depict a football star.”
However, despite his previous experience, he found the physicality of training for Tuggle particularly challenging. “Superman doesn’t engage in much running, while Tuggle was a running back who sprinted a great deal,” he noted. “It had been nearly a decade since I had last sprinted, so it was quite a change.”

John Tuggle’s story is one of determination and camaraderie. After being drafted by the New York Giants, he earned the unfortunate nickname “Mr. Irrelevant” for being the last player selected. However, his legacy extends far beyond this title. Corenswet emphasized the profound impact that Tuggle had on his teammates and fans, a theme that resonates throughout the film.
Aside from the physical preparation, the actor also worked on capturing Tuggle’s distinct personality. “The character came to life for me through the mustache, hair, and his charming dialect,” he mentioned. Corenswet adapted his appearance to embody Tuggle, even going blonde for the role. He conducted extensive research, watching interviews and studying tapes of Tuggle to develop a deeper understanding of his character.
Tragically, Tuggle’s life was cut short at the age of 25 due to cancer, leaving behind a lasting influence on those who knew him. Corenswet commented on the importance of Tuggle’s legacy, stating, “The most significant impact we have is on the lives of those around us. While records and history may endure, it is our personal interactions that shape how others will remember us.”

The actor went on to reflect on how Tuggle inspired legendary players and coaches, as well as his loved ones. “John’s story is about changing lives—making them laugh a little differently or appreciate life in new ways,” he added thoughtfully. “That is the true relevance of his legacy.”
“Mr. Irrelevant” promises to be an inspiring portrayal of Tuggle’s life and contributions to football, highlighting themes of resilience and personal connection. Following this project, Corenswet will return in his role as Clark Kent in the sequel “Man of Tomorrow,” set to release in July 2027.
As anticipation builds for “Mr. Irrelevant,” Corenswet’s dedication to portraying such a significant figure in sports history has already made a noteworthy impact on audiences and fans alike. The film’s release on Christmas Day is expected to attract many viewers eager to witness the touching narrative of John Tuggle’s life and legacy.
