Steven Spielberg is set to play a more active role in the development of the next Transformers film, marking a notable shift in his involvement with the iconic franchise. According to reports from industry sources such as Variety and IndieWire, the acclaimed director and producer will collaborate closely with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura on the upcoming eighth installment of the series.

Since the franchise’s inception in 2007, Spielberg has served as an executive producer on all seven previous live-action films. This new project promises to see him taking a hands-on approach, as he is expected to oversee the film’s creative aspects alongside di Bonaventura, who has been involved in many of the previous films, including the animated feature, Transformers One, due for release in 2024.

Notably, Michael Bay, who was at the helm for the first five films, is reportedly in discussions to return as director. Bay’s departure from the franchise came after the release of 2017’s The Last Knight, with Travis Knight and Steven Caple Jr. directing the subsequent films, Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts, respectively. Should Bay return, it would mark a significant reunion with a franchise he helped define.
While no official casting announcements have yet been made for the forthcoming film, it is believed that Shia LaBeouf, who starred in the first three instalments, is unlikely to reprise his role. The upcoming film is expected to be set in contemporary times and will feature a script penned by Jason Fuchs, known for his work on projects such as Wonder Woman and the recently announced Argylle.
This new entry in the Transformers saga will also bear the distinction of being the first film in which the beloved character Optimus Prime will not be voiced by Peter Cullen, the iconic voice actor who has brought the character to life since the franchise’s 1980s animated origins. Cullen’s passing at the age of 85 in August has left a significant void in the series, raising questions about how the character will be handled in this latest film.
The last live-action film, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which featured Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, was set in the 1990s. The conclusion of that film suggested a potential crossover with the G.I. Joe franchise, which is also undergoing a reboot at Paramount, with new stories crafted by Danny McBride and featuring Bradley Cooper. However, plans for a direct crossover between Transformers and G.I. Joe appear to have been abandoned.
Throughout the years, the Transformers series has enlisted a variety of stars, including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Mark Wahlberg, who appeared in Age of Extinction and The Last Knight. Hailee Steinfeld starred in Bumblebee, which was well-received for its character depth and storyline.
On the personal front, Spielberg’s recent projects include his June release, Disclosure Day, featuring Josh O’Connor and Emily Blunt in a narrative that explores humanity’s contact with alien life. Following this, Spielberg has expressed interest in crafting a Western, a genre he has yet to explore in his storied career.
Meanwhile, Bay has directed only a handful of films since his last Transformers effort, including 2019’s 6 Underground and 2022’s Ambulance. His return to the franchise could rekindle interest in his signature style of blockbuster filmmaking.
As the next Transformers movie progresses through development, fans are left eagerly awaiting news, including a release date and additional casting details. With Spielberg’s renewed involvement and potential returning talent, this new chapter could bring fresh energy to a franchise that continues to capture the imagination of audiences around the world.
