PepsiCo, the parent company of the popular sports drink brand Gatorade, has initiated a voluntary recall of specific flavours due to the presence of undeclared food dyes. The announcement, made on September 25, has raised concerns among consumers regarding the potential health implications of consuming these products.

The recall affects approximately 122,021 cases of certain 28 oz. Gatorade bottles, specifically the Lemon Lime, Lemon Lime Zero, Orange, and Orange Zero flavours. According to a report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the issue stems from the presence of Yellow No. 6 and/or Yellow No. 5, which were not disclosed on the product labels.

On October 2, the FDA categorised this recall as a Class II incident. This classification indicates that exposure to the recalled items could result in temporary or medically reversible health effects, albeit with a remote chance of more serious adverse consequences. Consumers are urged to check their Gatorade bottles for affected lot numbers and corresponding expiration dates.
The impacted batch ranges include various lot numbers, such as Lot 091026 DL with an expiry date of June 7, 2027, and Lot 072226 DT, expiring on April 18, 2027, among others. Overall, the affected Gatorade products have been distributed across 37 states, including states as far apart as Alaska and Florida, as well as major regions like California and New York.
As part of the recall response, consumers are advised to examine their inventory of Gatorade drinks and refrain from consuming the products linked to the affected lot numbers. As of now, it remains unclear how the issue came to light, and PepsiCo did not provide an immediate response regarding queries on the matter.
In a separate development, PepsiCo has plans to eliminate synthetic food dyes from Gatorade in the future. In an announcement made in April 2025, the company indicated its intentions to shift towards using natural colours in its products. This transition, as stated by PepsiCo representatives, will unfold over multiple years and will involve thorough ingredient testing, consumer feedback, and seeking FDA approval.
“Launching a product that doesn’t resonate with consumers is not our objective,” a company spokesperson emphasized, reflecting a commitment to ensuring the quality and acceptability of the revamped Gatorade offerings.
As Gatorade continues to navigate the complexities of consumer safety and product integrity, this recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food labelling and transparency in ingredient disclosure. The incident underscores the ongoing scrutiny food and beverage companies face in maintaining public trust.
Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and check their products regularly to ensure they are not in possession of any recalled items. In an era increasingly focused on health and well-being, such recalls can play a crucial role in driving awareness about food safety issues and the choices consumers make regarding their dietary preferences.
