Two avid hikers, Cassius Newton and Aran Martinson, tragically succumbed to the harsh conditions while trekking in the Wadi Naqab mountains of the United Arab Emirates on 18 July 2026. Newton, aged 34, was the son of renowned former Chelsea Football Club player Eddie Newton. Both men were reported missing before their bodies were discovered by rescuers approximately 4 kilometres from their parked vehicle.

The pair had set out on their hiking adventure at around 7 a.m. local time. Search teams located them lying on the ground, surrounded by large rocks, spaced about 350 metres apart. Subsequently, they were transported to a medical facility in Ras Al Khaimah, where they were pronounced dead.

At a coroner’s hearing, it was revealed that both Newton and Martinson suffered from organ failure triggered by dangerously elevated body temperatures. Area coroner, Michelle Brown, classified their deaths as misadventure resulting from an intentional trip, compounded by a severe heatwave gripping the region.
Reports indicate that prior to their hike, Cassius had contacted his wife in the UK approximately five hours beforehand to discuss their plans. Despite her warnings regarding the extreme heat — which can reach around 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) — he decided to proceed with the hike. Brown highlighted that Newton had gone out the night before and would have likely been sleep-deprived, while concerns were raised that his phone may not have had sufficient battery.
In the wake of their absence, the wives of both men became increasingly worried. Martinson’s wife reached out to him via text, playfully noting that he must be “cooking” in the heat by 9:26 a.m. When there was no response after several hours, her concern deepened, prompting her to express her distress in a subsequent message.
Coroner Brown noted that the route chosen by the friends was considered recreational and not requiring climbing gear. Typically, the hike is expected to take around four hours to complete, suggesting that they may not have anticipated the difficulties they would encounter.
The sports community has been shaken by the news of Cassius Newton’s passing. Chelsea FC expressed their sorrow through an official statement, saying, “CFC is devastated to learn of the passing of former Academy player Cassius Newton, son of our former player and coach Eddie. Our thoughts are with Cassius’ family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
The incident raises awareness about the dangers of hiking in extreme weather, especially in desert areas. Hiking enthusiasts are often reminded to check the weather conditions and stay connected with loved ones about their whereabouts. The tragic loss of Cassius Newton and Aran Martinson serves as a solemn reminder of the potential risks associated with outdoor activities in harsh environments.
As investigations continue, both families are left to grapple with the heart-wrenching loss of their loved ones, and the community mourns the passing of two individuals who sought adventure but paid the ultimate price.
