According to local reports and information provided by school district officials, the collision took place at approximately 9:35 p.m. when a 2013 Subaru Impreza crossed the centre line and struck the bus head-on. The driver of the Subaru, identified as 35-year-old Douglas McMillan, was pronounced dead at the scene, becoming the only casualty of the incident.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) reported that three students and the bus driver were among those taken to hospital for their injuries. Fortunately, reports indicate that none of these individuals sustained major injuries. The bus was travelling back to Virginia after the game when it encountered the Subaru, as detailed in a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Following the crash, both vehicles came to rest in a ditch on the side of the road. Another school bus from Washington County Public Schools (WCPS), which was part of the same return convoy, was travelling closely behind but was not involved in the collision. The district expressed gratitude to first responders for their swift action at the scene and the care provided to the students.
In the aftermath of the accident, school officials reassured families that support was in place for the students involved. They commended local first responders, Johnson County Public Schools, and community members for their assistance during the traumatic event. A statement from WCPS acknowledged the teamwork and immediate response displayed by staff, coaches, and parents, highlighting the compassion shown under distressing circumstances.
The school district noted in their communication to families that the students demonstrated remarkable solidarity in the face of adversity. “Our football squad did exactly what you would expect from a team: they rallied and took care of one another in a heartwarming display of brotherhood,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the JCSO confirmed that a secondary crash occurred due to the initial incident; however, this did not result in any fatalities. Some minor injuries were reported, with at least one individual receiving medical attention.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, aiming to uncover further details regarding the events leading up to the crash. Meanwhile, the WCPS has underscored the importance of community support during this trying time, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of care from fellow residents.
The school district assured families that their students and staff were being looked after and comforted following the accident. They highlighted the proactive approach taken by WCPS personnel in responding to the situation and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
As the community reflects on the events of that evening, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities associated with travelling, particularly for young athletes and their coaches. The loss of life and injuries sustained have touched numerous lives, and the focus now shifts towards healing and recovery for the affected individuals and their families.
