A remarkable story of hope and resilience has emerged from Somerset, where 28-year-old Keeleigh John, who battled significant health challenges from a young age, has found joy in the unexpected news of her pregnancy. After overcoming four serious bouts of sepsis earlier this year, Keeleigh discovered she was expecting a child, now at 14 weeks gestation, a development many thought was improbable given her medical history.

Keeleigh’s journey began when, as a small child, she was diagnosed with chronic renal failure and required both a liver and kidney transplant. At the tender age of 12, doctors informed her family that the chances of her having children were slim. However, Keeleigh’s determination and the generosity of her organ donor’s family have contributed to her health and hopeful future.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Keeleigh revealed her surprising pregnancy during her recovery. “We’re at the 14-week point now. The baby looks healthy, and I’m doing really well,” she shared with enthusiasm. Medical assessments have indicated that the risk of any of her conditions affecting the unborn child is exceedingly low, providing her with added peace of mind.
Reflecting on her past, Keeleigh expressed immense gratitude towards the family of her organ donor. She acknowledged that their decision, likely made during an incredibly heartbreaking time, has allowed her not only to live but also to experience motherhood. “I owe it all to them,” she stated during the interview, showcasing a profound respect for the gift of life that was extended to her.
Keeleigh’s medical challenges began at a young age, and by the age of 14 months, she was already facing health difficulties due to congenital hepatic fibrosis and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease. It wasn’t until she went for dental surgery at 12 that it became apparent her kidney function had significantly deteriorated. Her mother, Tracy John, recalled how that visit was pivotal in identifying Keeleigh’s potentially life-threatening condition.
“Every second counts,” Tracy commented, reflecting on how a seemingly innocuous dental issue could have changed the trajectory of Keeleigh’s health. Had the dental surgery not exposed her deteriorating condition, Tracy fears the outcome could have been dire.
Today, Keeleigh is not only thriving as a prospective mother but is also engaging actively in sports. As a participant in the British Transplant Games, she has previously excelled in various disciplines including shot put, archery, and discus. Excitingly, she is currently awaiting news on her selection for the upcoming 2027 World Transplant Games in Belgium, aiming to exhibit her athletic talent on an international stage.
The issue of organ donations remains critically important in the UK, with the current transplant waiting list reaching unprecedented levels. The number of deceased organ donations has seen a decline in recent years, prompting voices like Keeleigh’s to advocate for donor registration and awareness. She believes that those who might need an organ should also consider the importance of being willing to donate, highlighting the reciprocal nature of organ donation.
Tracy, reflecting on her daughter’s journey, expressed astonishment at Keeleigh’s achievements and her present circumstances. “We were told years ago we’d be lucky to see her survive to eight, and then it was to 12,” she said, marveling at how far Keeleigh has come. The unfolding story of Keeleigh John serves as an encouraging reminder of the miracles that can emerge from adversity and the fundamental importance of organ donation in transforming lives.
Both Keeleigh and her mother, now looking forward to welcoming a new member into their family, hope that their experiences can inspire others. They aim to shine a light on the significance of organ donation, with Keeleigh’s story standing as a poignant testament to the impact that such choices can have on individuals and families alike.
