Authorities confirmed that the incident took place around 11:40 a.m. and both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. An Garda Síochána, the national police service of Ireland, reported that a post-mortem examination is pending and stated that the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been informed of the tragic occurrences. No details have yet been released regarding the specific circumstances surrounding the accident.

Mihai and Denisa had been working at Banagher Precast Concrete for several years and were well-known within the local area. The accident occurred while they were in the process of creating a concrete mould, according to various reports. Both individuals had originally hailed from Romania, and their unexpected deaths have left a void in the lives of those who knew them.

The family is now mourning the loss of Mihai and Denisa, with their obituary highlighting the grief felt by Angela, Mihai’s wife, Lavinia Alexandra, Mihai’s other daughter and Denisa’s sister, and Denisa’s fiancé, Liviu Baj. John Leahy, chairperson of the Birr Municipal District, expressed the community’s deep sorrow, emphasising the support being offered to the family during this difficult time.
A funeral mass was held on the 1st of October at St. Rynagh’s Church in Banagher, where Father Pat Kiernan delivered a poignant eulogy. During the service, he reminded attendees that the day of the accident coincided with Mihai and Angela’s 26th wedding anniversary. “At 10 a.m. on Monday morning, Mihai, Denisa, Angela and Liviu sat together in the canteen for their morning break,” he recalled. The warmth of their shared laughter and conversation was evident as he recounted how Mihai had even suggested they celebrate with a cake after work.
However, just an hour later, the day transformed into a nightmare for the family and the community. Father Kiernan’s account of the day’s events painted a vivid picture of the last moments of joy they shared—before suddenly everything changed. “No cake, no candles or celebrations, but rather cries of anguish, wooden coffins and books of condolences,” he lamented.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, Denisa and Mihai are remembered for the love they shared, both at home and in the workplace. Colleagues described them as having a strong bond that resonated beyond family ties, underscoring the close-knit nature of their relationships.
Banagher Precast Concrete has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. In a statement to the Irish Times, the company described the incident as a devastating tragedy and affirmed their commitment to providing support and assistance to the grieving families during this exceedingly challenging time.
The local community remains in shock as it processes the loss of two cherished individuals, highlighting the critical importance of workplace safety in preventing such tragic events in the future. As investigations continue to uncover the circumstances of the accident, the focus now rests on supporting those left behind and ensuring that their memories live on.
