Joe Hahn, the band’s creative director and the film’s director, reflects on the harrowing period after Bennington’s death, noting that “In 2017, everything stopped.” Each member grappled with their grief in different ways, attempting to reconcile their emotions while trying to remember the vibrant energy Bennington brought to the group. Mike Shinoda somewhat summarises that feeling when he recalls, “We had just written a great record that we loved, and we were excited to be out on tour with it, and then it all just came to a crashing halt.”
In the years that followed, the band struggled to maintain their momentum. Despite moments of creative collaboration, the emptiness left by Bennington’s absence loomed large. Shinoda relayed his feelings of despair, stating, “There were moments where I just felt like it was over.” It was not until late 2022 that a turning point emerged during a meeting in Shinoda’s studio, where it became clear that perseverance was essential for Linkin Park’s survival.
Farrell highlighted the complexity of their grieving process, expressing that he felt a multitude of emotions all at once—including disappointment, anger, and guilt. With a long history since their formation in 1996, it was evident that every member’s ties to the band ran deep, complicating their journey forward. However, it was from this hardship that the band sought to reinvent itself through new collaborations.
While contemplating the future of Linkin Park, the remaining members realised they needed a fresh perspective. In their search for new talent, the band found Emily Armstrong and Colin Brittain, who both brought a renewed energy to the group. Hahn recalls the moment he realised Armstrong could be the new lead vocalist, describing it as a revelation when he heard her powerful voice. He added that Armstrong’s “energetic” personality injected a new dynamic into the band, a quality that had been missed during their time of mourning.
Armstrong, who joined as part of the band in 2024, faced the daunting task of performing classics such as “In the End” and “Crawling,” both of which hold significant emotional weight for fans. Reflecting on this challenge, she stated, “They would always say, ‘Emily, we know how you sound… Just be you.’” For her, the goal was to deliver an emotional performance that resonated with longstanding fans while honouring Bennington’s legacy.
As the band navigated new musical territory, they released their eighth studio album, *From Zero*, in November 2024, which showcased their evolved sound. Following a successful nearly two-year global tour, the documentary captures this new chapter and highlights their resilience in the face of overwhelming loss. The film features footage from their recent *From Zero* tour alongside more intimate moments of the band’s journey toward rebuilding their identity.
Interestingly, the documentary also touches on the absence of drummer Rob Bourdon, who chose not to return to the band after Bennington’s passing. He felt that continuing as part of Linkin Park was not a good fit for him. Despite this, the remaining members respected his decision, focusing instead on creating a supportive environment for Armstrong and Brittain to thrive in.
In reflection, Hahn expressed the importance of representation and the role of strong women in music, noting that every male band member has daughters and values the significance of positive role models like Armstrong. By coming back together to create new music, the band found hope not only for themselves but also for their fans, as they celebrated their re-emergence in the music scene.
As Linkin Park continues to work on new material, Hahn assures fans that Bennington’s spirit remains a strong presence within the band. “He’s still always with us… He lives through not just the music, but everyone he’s touched,” he stated, conveying the group’s dedication to honouring their friend while forging ahead in their musical journey.
