Pregnant Anne Hathaway’s Doctor Forbade Her from Doing“ Hot Ones ”Because She Might ‘Go Into Early Labor’: ‘Maybe Next Year’

Anne Hathaway, the acclaimed actress best known for her roles in films such as “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Les Misérables,” has recently confirmed that she is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman. The couple, who already share two sons, Jonathan and Jack, are preparing to welcome their newest family member in September 2026.

In the midst of her pregnancy, Hathaway is also promoting her latest film, “Verity,” which is set to be released on October 2. During a recent appearance on the “Talk of the Townsends” podcast, she discussed her desire to participate in the popular YouTube series “Hot Ones,” known for its unique format where guests consume increasingly spicy chicken wings while answering questions. Hathaway expressed a strong interest in taking part in the show, especially as it is featured prominently in the plot of “Verity.”

However, her excitement was tempered by medical advice. Hathaway revealed that her doctor has advised against participating in the fiery challenge due to concerns that extreme spiciness could potentially trigger early labour, stating, “I still haven’t done the gauntlet yet. I’m not sure when that’s going to happen.” The actress was initially keen to engage in the spicy wing challenge, admitting, “I thought that I was going to be able to do the Hot Ones challenge to do press for this film because it just made sense.”

Hathaway did, however, mention that while filming her scenes for “Verity,” she did try some spicy wings for effect before switching to dummy wings. “I did the first three wings for real, and then I switched to dummy wings,” she shared, illustrating her commitment to the role even while expecting.

The topic of spicy food and its connection to labour was brought up during the podcast discussion. It’s a well-known fact that some pregnant women turn to spicy dishes in the hopes of inducing labour, with Hathaway jokingly acknowledging this cultural belief.

While Hathaway had creative input in the film’s direction during production meetings, she explained that certain segments, including the “Hot Ones” interview and a scripted appearance with Alex Cooper from “Call Her Daddy,” were added to elevate her character’s profile as a cultural icon. She remarked, “I was thinking if we could do something like, I don’t know, get a Gayle King interview and ‘Hot Ones,’ that would be kind of the triple crown trifecta.”

Despite her interest in the show, Hathaway compared the experience to a pivotal life moment, saying, “You don’t want your first kiss ever in your life to be like an on-screen kiss. You want that to be a real thing.” This analogy highlights her perspective on wanting to experience significant events outside of a performative context.

In “Verity,” Hathaway takes on the role of the titular author, Verity Crawford, alongside co-stars Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. The film, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, revolves around a struggling writer, Lowen, played by Johnson, who seizes the opportunity to complete a series left unfinished by the celebrated but mysterious Verity. Hartnett portrays Verity’s husband, Jeremy, adding to the film’s intense narrative.

The actress initially shared news of her pregnancy in June, following which she showcased her growing baby bump at various promotional events. In an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in August, Hathaway revealed that while the couple is aware of the sex of the baby, they are keeping it a secret for the time being.

As Hathaway looks ahead to her third child and the release of “Verity,” fans will have to patiently await the day she finally takes on the “Hot Ones” challenge—a symbolic rite of passage for many celebrities.
