The incident escalated after a street altercation in Longton resulted in Kashif Ahmed being stabbed in the shoulder by a group including Naveed Hussain, Bilal Ahmed, and Ali Abbas. The fight occurred at approximately 4 p.m., and nearly seven hours later, a gang of men forced their way to a house in Stoke-on-Trent with the intention of confronting Hussain, who had been involved in the earlier stabbing.
According to police reports, the gang demanded to speak to Hussain and then proceeded to vandalise the property by smashing windows and dousing areas of the house in petrol. The targeted home was occupied by a 31-year-old woman, who had a romantic history with Hussain, and her 13-year-old daughter. In a terrifying turn of events, the victim was violently struck on the head and subsequently set on fire by the group.
Both the mother and daughter managed to escape by breaking a window and leaping to safety. However, they sustained severe injuries in the process. The daughter suffered burns to 15% of her right arm, while her mother endured catastrophic injuries, including 65% burns, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, and a lacerated liver. Initially placed in a coma, the mother faced a long and arduous recovery process, enduring extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation to relearn basic functions such as walking.
At the recent sentencing hearing, prosecutor Siobhan Collins articulated that the fire was a deliberate attempt at revenge against Naveed Hussain. She asserted that the earlier stabbing of Kashif Ahmed predicated the events that led to the fire, establishing the motive behind the aggression exhibited that evening. The situation escalated quickly; Collins described how members of the group arranged for reinforcements almost immediately after the assault on Ahmed.
Judge Rupert Mayo described the scene that the victims encountered as perhaps one of the most horrific imaginable. He noted that the family was relaxing in their home, decorated for the festive season, blissfully unaware of the men plotting an act of vengeance against them. The judge emphasised the audacity of these men, stating that their actions were in response to a relatively minor altercation involving Hussain.

Detective Constable Howard Davies revealed that police utilized CCTV footage, digital evidence, and forensic analysis to accurately piece together the roles of each individual in the attack. Sentences varied significantly among the defendants. Shakil Uddin received 34 years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life. On the lower end of the sentencing scale, Kashif Ahmed was sentenced to 48 weeks in jail for violent disorder, while Bilal Ahmed received a 15-month suspended sentence for the same charge. Naveed Hussain, who pleaded guilty to violent disorder and possession of a knife in a public space, was sentenced to six months, also suspended for 18 months.
