An 82-year-old woman, Christine Tan, has shared her inspiring journey of recovery after a wrist injury left her struggling to perform everyday tasks. In an interview with My London, she described the challenges she faced following the accident, which occurred in 2025. The injury not only prevented her from lifting a cup of tea or carrying her shopping but also impacted her ability to drive, forcing her to reassess her independence.
Tan’s road to recovery began after she enrolled in Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital’s Lift for Life resistance programme in London. Designed specifically for older adults, this initiative aims to enhance strength and balance, vital components for maintaining an active lifestyle as one ages. She explained, “At first, I thought I’d be disabled for life after my accident. I started off with a few exercises and, honestly, could hardly lift even 1kg or a simple cup of tea due to low energy levels.”

Over the course of ten weeks, Tan dedicated herself to the programme, attending sessions at the hospital. According to her account, the transformation was remarkable. “Every time I went, I increased the weights. By the end of the ten weeks, I could do so much more. I noticed significant improvements,” she recounted. This newfound strength not only enabled her to regain her independence but also helped her tackle daily chores with confidence, such as shopping and carrying bags.
“I live alone, and I have to do things on my own, so it was hard. But now I can manage it all,” said Tan, reflecting on her enhanced abilities. Her commitment to physical activity does not stop at the programme; she now goes to the gym approximately four times a week, participates in various classes, and aims to complete 10,000 steps daily. She emphasised, “It’s important to keep active at our age,” highlighting the significance of physical fitness among the elderly.
The Lift for Life programme, spearheaded by physiotherapist James Cameron, has been developed to address the challenges faced by older adults. Its focus on resistance training and balance improvement is critical in empowering participants to lead healthier lives. After completing the ten-week sessions, attendees are encouraged to continue exercise routines at home or at local gyms, fostering a long-term commitment to fitness.
Cameron expressed his fulfilment in witnessing the progress of participants like Tan, noting the enthusiasm and motivation that often blossom throughout the course. “Seeing people like Christine is very rewarding. Watching their enthusiasm grow, alongside the support from my team, makes it a worthwhile experience,” he remarked. He also indicated that the team continuously seeks innovative ways to enhance patient satisfaction and the overall effectiveness of the programme.
As the elderly population in the UK continues to grow, such initiatives are becoming increasingly essential in promoting health and well-being among older adults. Christine Tan’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for recovery and resilience, even after significant setbacks. By participating in structured programmes, older individuals can regain not only their physical capabilities but also their confidence and independence.
Tan’s journey is not just a personal tale of triumph; it’s an illustration of how community-based health programmes can positively impact the lives of senior citizens. The Lift for Life resistance programme stands as a testament to the benefits of regular exercise and the value of providing support tailored to the needs of older adults.
Through her experience, Tan encourages others facing similar challenges to seek assistance and explore such programmes. Her determination and newfound strength demonstrate that, regardless of age, it is never too late to embark on a journey towards improved health and vitality. In doing so, she hopes to inspire others to embrace an active lifestyle and foster a greater sense of independence in their lives.
