N.Y.C. Housing Worker, 56, Killed by Falling Tree from Nor’Easter’s Extreme Wind Suffered ‘Trauma Throughout’ His Body

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) has expressed its deep sorrow following the tragic death of one of its employees, Leighton Brown, who was fatally struck by a falling tree during a nor’easter storm that recently swept through New York City. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 26, while Brown was walking through a parking lot in Brooklyn.

According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the 56-year-old was severely injured when the tree fell on him. He was immediately taken to One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale Hospital Medical Center but, despite the medical team’s efforts, he was pronounced dead due to extensive trauma sustained in the incident.

In a statement, NYCHA offered condolences to Brown’s family and the wider community, reflecting on the loss of a valued member of their team. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Brown’s family and the NYCHA community,” the statement read.

The nor’easter, which caused heavy rainfall and strong winds across the region, also caught the attention of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani who shared his thoughts on social media. “Tonight, we are mourning the loss of one of our own after NYCHA employee, Leighton Brown, died while at Cypress Hills Houses in Brooklyn,” he posted on X. The mayor described the situation as unimaginable and emphasised the need to remember Brown’s service to the city.

Witnesses to the incident recounted hearing a loud noise before witnessing the tragedy unfold. David Ortiz, a resident of a nearby apartment complex, noted that he and his wife were alarmed by the “big bang” that preceded the fall. “He was already gone; you could tell he was gone,” Ortiz commented. The weight and size of the tree that fell were significant, and Ortiz expressed his sorrow at losing someone who was well-liked in the community.

Many residents remembered Brown fondly, with Ortiz recalling a recent encounter where Brown had provided assistance with a light fixture in his home. He described Brown as a friendly person who had a special rapport with the local residents, even jokingly expressing a desire to “kidnap” Ortiz’s dog. “It’s so sad,” Ortiz reflected, sharing his disbelief over the loss of such a kind-hearted individual.

James Alcivar, who serves as the president of the Cypress Hills Tenant Association, praised Brown’s dedication to his role within the community. He described Brown as one of the best employees at the Cypress Hills development, stating, “If you had work that needed to be done in your house, he was the guy to call.” Alcivar confirmed that Brown was known for his commitment and passion for his work, further highlighting the magnitude of this tragedy.

In light of the storm, the city urged residents to exercise caution during adverse weather conditions, particularly given the risk posed by falling trees and debris. Many across the boroughs were advised to stay indoors or seek shelter until the storm had passed, as emergency services were mobilised to respond to incidents arising from the severe weather.
