**’American Horror Story’ Season 13 Welcomes Back Iconic Stars, But Not Without Notable Absences**

The much-anticipated 13th season of “American Horror Story” is set to return with a host of familiar faces, promising to deliver the thrills that fans have come to expect. Among the stars reprising their roles are the illustrious Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, and Billie Lourd. However, some beloved characters will be missed this season, with Taissa Farmiga being a significant absence from the cast line-up.
During the premiere event in New York City on September 23rd, show co-creator Ryan Murphy shared insight into the casting choices for this latest season. In conversation with PEOPLE, Murphy noted that the decision to exclude Farmiga wasn’t personal but rather a narrative requirement. “I’ll always love her, but sometimes it’s just the story and the progression of the story,” he stated. According to Murphy, the creative process often dictates the cast, with several factors influencing these decisions, including actor availability.
Farmiga has been a prominent figure in the “American Horror Story” franchise, portraying three different characters over the years: Violet Harmon in the initial season, Zoe Benson in the third, and Sophie Green in the sixth. She even revisited her role as Violet in the show’s eighth season. Although she won’t be part of the current series, she is set to return to HBO’s “The Gilded Age” shortly.
Writer and producer Ned Martel echoed Murphy’s sentiments, explaining the challenges of bringing back fan-favourite characters. “There are a lot of people that we could have brought back that fans love, that we love. The love was there, plenty of love, plenty of interest, but there’s never enough time, is there?” he remarked. This reflects the ongoing tension between audience expectations and the practicalities of production.
In addition to Farmiga, several other notable cast members have confirmed they will not be returning for this season. Denis O’Hare, who has been part of multiple seasons since the show’s inception, revealed he was not approached for the new episodes. Similarly, Lily Rabe, a longtime cast member, is absent from the announced cast of Season 13.
Interestingly, Ariana Grande was initially slated to join the cast but had to withdraw due to conflicting tour schedules. Murphy revealed that the pop star was keen to participate, stating, “Ariana was touring and I couldn’t make it work. But she was like, ‘I still want to do it! I just can’t be on tour.’” This reflects the ongoing behind-the-scenes challenges entertainment producers face when juggling various commitments of their cast.
Despite these absences, Season 13 of “American Horror Story” remains packed with talent. The new episodes will also feature familiar names including Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, Gabourey Sidibe, Kathy Bates, Leslie Grossman, John Carroll Lynch, and Jamie Brewer. Murphy has expressed that the inclusion of Lange was pivotal for this season’s development; without her, he might not have moved forward with the new storyline. “I reached out to her thinking she would say no, and if she had said no, I probably wouldn’t have done it,” he shared.
Murphy recalled Lange’s experience in theatre, where she discovered many young fans were drawn to her work in “American Horror Story”, leading her to reflect on her connection with that role. “She told me a story about how she was doing Broadway last season…and she was very moved by that,” Murphy recounted. This relationship between the cast and their audience illustrates the lasting impact the series has had on its viewers.
