A terrifying incident unfolded in New York City as students with special needs on a school bus were forced to hide when the vehicle was struck by gunfire. The shocking event took place in the Morrisania area of the Bronx on March 21, involving half a dozen students. The bus, near East 163rd Street and Trinity Avenue, found itself unexpectedly caught in a hail of bullets at around 2:20 p.m. local time, as reported by Fox 5 New York, ABC 7 NY, and News 12.

The courageous bus driver, amidst the chaos, continued driving for about half a mile to ensure the safety of the children on board. Reports indicated that at least three shots hit the bus during the incident – one piercing the back window and two striking the side of the vehicle. Fortunately, none of the individuals inside the bus sustained any injuries, as confirmed by ABC 7 NY.
The bus was occupied by a group of students with special needs, accompanied by the driver and a school bus matron. In a show of incredible bravery, the matron shielded two of the children by ducking down as the bus quickly sped away from the danger. Colleague Jose Polanco shared with ABC 7 NY that the driver’s primary concern was the safety of the kids on board.
Law enforcement authorities revealed that the bus became collateral damage as four suspects engaged in a gunfire exchange, all clad in black attire. Following the chaotic incident, the suspects fled the scene on foot. The search for these individuals is currently underway, as per CBS New York reports.
In response to the shooting’s proximity to a playground and school, students at a nearby educational institution were placed on lockdown for approximately 30 minutes beyond regular dismissal time. Despite these harrowing events, neither the New York City Public Schools nor the New York Police Department (NYPD) have provided immediate statements in response to inquiries made by PEOPLE on Sunday, March 23.
The safety and security of students in educational settings have always been paramount. Incidents like this highlight the vulnerability of children, particularly those with special needs, to unexpected dangers. The bravery of the bus driver and matron in swiftly navigating the perilous situation to protect the students serves as a testament to their dedication and quick thinking in the face of adversity.
This incident underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of students during their daily commutes to and from school. The need for proactive measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future is a pressing concern for authorities and communities alike. The resilience and composure displayed by all individuals involved in this alarming event deserve recognition and serve as a reminder of the unwavering commitment to safeguarding the well-being of students under challenging circumstances.
