A record-breaking mural of renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough has been unveiled at Sunnyfields Farm in Hampshire to celebrate his 100th birthday. The striking artwork, which spans an impressive 2,349 square feet, is composed of 11,000 pumpkins and squashes, making it the largest squash mosaic image ever recorded, according to Guinness World Records.

The mural, depicting Attenborough with a joyful smile while holding a frog, showcases both creativity and vibrant colours. It represents the third world record achieved by the Nelson family, owners of Sunnyfields Farm, for their impressive pumpkin murals in just four years. Previous tributes have included designs honouring music icon Ozzy Osbourne and the beloved character Jack Skellington from Tim Burton’s animated classic, “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
Tom Nelson, a director at the farm, explained that the inspiration for this year’s mural came from public suggestions. Engaging with the local community via social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram helps the farm gauge what themes resonate most with visitors. Following this input, the design team collaborates to create an artistic vision, which is then brought to life by their talented in-house artist, Andrew Bega, over the course of several months.
Creating such a monumental work requires dedication and teamwork. The actual assembly of the mural concluded in around five hours, with a skilled team of 18 individuals utilising three JCB telehandlers. The pumpkins are arranged in a specific order to form the image, with the team passing them carefully to ensure accuracy. “We plan the build to take six hours,” Tom explained, describing the coordinated effort involved in constructing the artwork.
This year’s project, however, faced particular challenges due to adverse weather conditions in the UK. The summer was marked by a shortage of rain, coupled with several heatwaves, complicating farming efforts. “The heat and lack of rain have been unprecedented,” Tom remarked. Optimal conditions for growing pumpkins typically involve plenty of sunlight coupled with sufficient water, yet these were not prevalent this year.
Sunnyfields Farm has been making headlines not only for its artistic achievements but also for its ability to adapt and overcome challenges. The new mural surpasses their previous record of 2,281 square feet set for the tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. The Osbourne family even visited the mural during its unveiling in October of the same year, acknowledging the farm’s creative homage to the rock legend.
In an adventurous spirit, the team aimed to create a larger mural than last year’s efforts. Tom detailed the adjustments made to the design to enhance its overall symmetry and impact. Some 20 tonnes of additional soil were required to elevate one side, allowing for a more aesthetically pleasing result.
Reflecting on the history of these murals, Tom recalled that his father began this unique project eight years ago, originally viewing the idea with skepticism. However, he soon recognised the joy and excitement these creations inspired in visitors, fostering a sense of community and anticipation for each year’s unveiling.
Looking ahead to future creations, Tom expressed enthusiasm about the potential for continuing to push boundaries. “There is always scope to go bigger and better,” he stated, while playfully noting that they have yet to settle on exact ideas for next year’s mural. The ongoing relationship with the community will undoubtedly continue to influence the farm’s artistic pursuits in the years to come.
