Crossing Guard Throws Herself in Front of Oncoming Car as It Accelerates Toward Children

Tara Sandstrom, a dedicated crossing guard in Lehi, Utah, became a local hero when she intervened to protect two children crossing the street from an approaching vehicle. The incident occurred on September 16, while Sandstrom was assisting the young pedestrians at a school crosswalk.

Dramatic footage captured by Sandstrom herself shows her raising her stop sign as the children, riding scooters, began to move through the crosswalk. As the situation escalated, a car that had previously stopped at the intersection unexpectedly began moving towards the children. Without hesitation, Sandstrom sprang into action, positioning herself between the vehicle and the children, urging the driver to halt with clear signals and urgent shouts.

Reflecting on her instinctive response, Sandstrom stated, “My instinct was simply to protect the kids and make sure everyone stayed safe.” Her swift actions ensured that the children could safely navigate the street without harm. After the vehicle came to a stop, Sandstrom remained vigilant, allowing the children to proceed across the road.

In a caption accompanying the now-viral video, Sandstrom elaborated on the dual responsibility she bears as a crossing guard. “As a crossing guard, my head is constantly on a swivel,” she explained. She is tasked with monitoring not just the actions of pedestrians but also the vehicles around her, ensuring that each crossing is as safe as possible.

Sandstrom took the opportunity to provide a reminder to motorists about the importance of remaining stopped until all pedestrians are safely off the crosswalk. “Please don’t assume that because you’re stopped, you can start creeping forward,” she cautioned. She stressed that drivers should wait until the area is clear and she has signalled that it’s safe before moving again.

She acknowledged that while most drivers do not intend to create dangerous situations, distractions or impatience can lead to unforeseen risks. “It only takes one distracted or impatient motorist for an ordinary school morning to become dangerous,” Sandstrom remarked.
