Shawn Johnson and Husband Andrew East Open the Doors to Their Nashville Farm That ‘Feels Like Summer Camp’

Shawn Johnson and Andrew East, former Olympic gymnast and NFL player respectively, have opened the doors to their remarkable family home situated in Tennessee, affectionately referred to as “Honey Hills.” In a recent interview with Better Homes & Gardens, the couple reflected on their journey of turning a dated 1970s property into a modern family abode while still cherishing its unique charm.

Having married in 2016, Shawn and Andrew initially envisioned settling in an older home with ample outdoor space after moving to the Nashville area in 2012. The couple, who now parent three children—Drew, aged 6, Jett, aged 5, and 2-year-old Bear—believed such a dream home might be several years down the line. However, their fortunes changed when they discovered their ideal property online and decided to visit it in person.

Andrew described the experience as having the ambiance of a “summer camp,” highlighting its brick walkways and Civil War-era wood fencing that give it a distinctive historical character. The couple felt an instant connection to the home, prompting them to take immediate action following the purchase. Initially, they retained their previous home just in case their plans for a farm lifestyle did not pan out, a decision that speaks to their cautious optimism.

Once they had secured their dream house, the couple collaborated with designer Lori Paranjape to navigate the renovation process. Rather than opt for drastic alterations, they sought to preserve the essence of the original structure. “We didn’t want to change it. We wanted to take everything it was and bring it back to life,” remarked Shawn, who has four Olympic medals to her name. Key elements, such as the inviting brick entryway and vaulted ceilings, were left intact as a nod to their home’s history.

Nevertheless, certain adaptations were necessary to make the house compatible with their growing family. For instance, the original iron railings on the staircase were not compliant with current safety regulations, leading the couple to construct replicas that would maintain the home’s vintage appeal. Andrew noted, “We tried to keep it as true to its original character as possible, just bringing it into modern times.”

In terms of interior design, Shawn and Andrew infused the space with contemporary furniture and light fixtures, set against a soothing neutral colour palette that opens up the interiors. Their kitchen, a focal point for family gatherings, was designed to accommodate their frequent entertaining, featuring nine bar stools at an expansive island and a large dining area that can comfortably host around 20 guests. Shawn articulated their entertaining philosophy, stating, “Invite everyone and make more food than you think is necessary.”

The couple’s dedication to family and community is reflected in their property, which also boasts chickens and an impressive apiary with approximately 80,000 bees. This significant number of bees inspired the creative name “Honey Hills” for their sprawling estate, signifying their commitment to both agriculture and sustainable living.

The basement, now a treasured space for family memories, includes a bourbon bar styled after a speakeasy, a heartfelt tribute to Andrew’s late father. In addition, beer cans collected from his childhood now adorn the fireplace, adding a personal touch that celebrates their family’s history.

As they continue to settle into their picturesque property, Johnson and East highlight not just their love for the house but also for the lifestyle it symbolizes—one rooted in family, tradition, and modern rustic charm. Their journey stands as a testament to achieving dreams with a blend of ambition and heartfelt nostalgia, solidifying Honey Hills as a cherished homestead for the family’s future.
