An Arizona couple has been arrested on multiple child abuse charges after allegedly subjecting their children to serious neglect and mistreatment. Jose Carrillo Ayala, 49, and Jennifer Carrillo, 50, stand accused of numerous incidents involving the couple’s daughters, ages 9 and 12, with claims including malnutrition, physical abuse, and extreme punitive measures.

The couple’s troubles began when a disturbing incident in June 2022 raised the alarm. According to police reports, the 9-year-old girl was discovered hiding beneath a neighbour’s patio bench after escaping a dire situation at home. She had reportedly jumped over a balcony wall to reach safety, sharing with authorities that her parents had left her locked outside in the scorching Arizona heat for several hours as punishment for holding a book incorrectly.
During the time the child was outside, temperatures rose to a staggering 104 degrees Fahrenheit. After enduring four hours without food or water, she attempted to escape her confined situation, which ultimately led to the discovery of her dire circumstances. Investigators later learned that this form of punishment was not an isolated instance, but rather a common method employed by her mother.
Further revelations from the young girl and her sister provided insight into the extent of the alleged abuse. Investigators determined that both children were subjected to various forms of physical and psychological mistreatment. Following the initial incident, the 9-year-old was taken to the hospital, where medical professionals expressed concern over her noticeably poor physical condition.
