A seven-year-old boy from Florida is receiving care after suffering severe burns in a tragic accident while engaging in a risky home experiment with his older brother. Elian Flores was hospitalised with significant injuries following an incident on 7 September, where he and his 11-year-old brother Benji were mixing household substances in what they considered a science experiment.

The brothers began their activity by combining hand sanitiser, soap, and rubbing alcohol in their bathroom. Unfortunately, the situation escalated dramatically when a lighter was introduced to the mix. The fire quickly engulfed Elian’s shirt, prompting immediate action from Benji, who rushed his younger brother into the shower in an effort to extinguish the flames. Family members, alerted by the commotion, quickly called for emergency assistance.
Elian was subsequently taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Centre, where he received specialised pediatric burn treatment. According to a post on a verified GoFundMe page created by a family member, Daasha Ferguson, Elian suffered second-degree burns covering approximately 19% of his body. His injuries were particularly severe on the right side of his face, abdomen, and limbs, where blisters and swelling were prominent.

In the aftermath of the accident, Elian remained in the Intensive Care Unit for over a week. His treatment involved a rigorous process that included debridement, extensive wound care, painful dressings, physical therapy, and psychological support, among other medical interventions. Updates on his condition revealed that, despite making some progress, Elian’s recovery was fraught with challenges and uncertainty.
On 15 September, Daasha shared a distressing update, describing how Elian was emotionally and physically drained. She reported that at times he struggled to speak due to the toll the ordeal had taken on his voice. Every day posed a tremendous emotional strain, requiring extraordinary strength from the young boy.
Elian faced particular difficulties during his first shower following the incident, where the water caused considerable pain to his wounds. The experience led to cries of distress that prompted medical staff to sedate and intubate him in order to assess the full extent of his injuries, which included areas affected by third-degree burns.
In spite of his circumstances, family members noted the remarkable courage Elian has consistently demonstrated throughout this ordeal. However, the emotional fatigue was evident as he battled through each painful day. Daasha highlighted the importance of providing Elian with comfort and reassurance during his recovery, emphasising that he should not face this journey alone.
Just two days after the updates regarding his condition, Elian was discharged from the hospital, allowing him to return to the comfort of his family home. Thankfully, he was reunited with his six older brothers and the familiarity of his surroundings, which provided him with a sense of safety and solace. Daasha expressed deep gratitude for this moment, emphasising the relief in knowing that Elian could sleep in his own space once again.
While the journey to recovery remains ongoing, the family views this recent development as a significant milestone. Elian’s fight continues, prompting his family to rally their support and request public prayers as they navigate the healing process. The community has shown an outpouring of generosity, with the GoFundMe campaign established to assist with medical expenses and care throughout this challenging time.
The entire family remains hopeful as they stand by Elian’s side, acknowledging that the road ahead may still be long and arduous, but cherishing every small step taken towards recovery.
