A mother’s heart-wrenching journey reflects the emotional battle of coping with profound loss, as Kaylee Massey shares the tragic story of her daughter, Poppy. At just 15 months old, Poppy succumbed to a rare and fatal neurological disorder known as TBCD leukodystrophy, which rapidly diminished her quality of life. Since her passing, Kaylee, 36, has found solace and purpose within a supportive online community by chronicling her experiences and the memories of her daughter.

Kaylee and her husband, Jake, welcomed Poppy into their lives in February 2022, wholly unaware of the devastating challenges that lay ahead. What initially seemed like a normal infancy soon transformed into a nightmare as they began to notice worrying developmental delays. By the time Poppy reached the age of nine months, a diagnosis of TBCD leukodystrophy confirmed their worst fears—a condition marked by progressive deterioration of the brain and nervous system, for which there is no known cure.

The couple closely monitored their daughter’s decline, noting her growing inability to perform basic tasks such as eating independently and moving her limbs. This rapid deterioration became a source of unrelenting distress for Kaylee and Jake, who were confronted with an agonising crossroads when Poppy suffered a cardiac arrest due to a respiratory illness. The medical team managed to revive her, but it required the use of a ventilator to maintain her breathing.
Confronted with overwhelming emotions, Kaylee reflected on the gravity of Poppy’s condition, stating, “It was the definition of hopeless. There was no cure, no treatments, nothing that would stop or slow her disease.” After much deliberation, and guided by the knowledge that Poppy’s quality of life could not be restored, the Masseys made the heart-rending choice to withdraw life support and allow their daughter to pass peacefully.
Poppy’s final moments on April 30, 2023, were spent with those who adored her, as the family chose to focus on comfort rather than treatment. “We wanted her to be comfortable, loved, at home, in our arms and all together as a family,” Kaylee explained. The loss of Poppy, who brightened their lives with her vibrant spirit, left both parents grappling with deep grief. “While Poppy was here, I would have done anything to take her pain away. After she died, in some ways it felt like the pain changed hands,” Kaylee shared.
Before Poppy’s diagnosis, Kaylee had been using social media as a platform to document life as a medical parent. The profoundly personal nature of her posts took on a new direction as she began to share Poppy’s journey. She discovered a community of support online, where collective experiences of love and loss resonated deeply. “Poppy had eyes where you could see into her soul and her personality was bigger than her body,” Kaylee said, reflecting on the impact Poppy had on those who followed her story.
Today, Kaylee continues to create content centred around motherhood, grief, and the memory of Poppy, striving to raise her other children, Rosie and Peter, while navigating her journey of loss. She approaches her storytelling with intention, aiming to provide companionship to others facing similar struggles without suggesting that there is a singular way to grieve.
“I try to share from my perspective and be a storyteller of mine and Poppy’s story,” Kaylee explains. With each video she posts, she hopes that viewers find ways to keep their departed loved ones alive in their memories, thus allowing themselves to honour their presence. The quote she adopts, “life doesn’t need more advice, it needs more storytellers,” underscores her commitment to conveying her truth and fostering connection through shared experiences.
In the aftermath of tragedy, many find solace in the act of remembrance, as Kaylee does when she talks about Poppy. Her focus is not on moving on, but rather on carrying her daughter’s spirit with her as she navigates life’s journey. “More than anything, I hope [viewers] find ways to keep their child’s love present in their lives,” she states, empowering others to find comfort in their own methods of remembrance.
Through her journey, Kaylee Massey stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable grief. She reminds us that while the pain of losing a child is unfathomable, sharing stories and experiences can provide a pathway towards healing, allowing love to endure beyond loss.
