A striking encounter occurred recently at Crystal Cove, Orange County, where a yellow-bellied sea snake was discovered on the beach for the first time in five years. On September 11, Jackie Aguilar reported the sighting, capturing footage that she shared with CBS News Los Angeles.
The yellow-bellied sea snake is known for its vibrant colours and potent venom. This highly venomous species, typically inhabiting warmer oceanic waters, is not frequently observed in California. The Australian Museum notes that these snakes are often washed ashore only when they are unwell or injured, as they are fully aquatic and reside predominantly in tropical regions, excluding the Atlantic Ocean.

Aguilar, who was out for a family walk, found the creature appearing lethargic and unusually sluggish. Initially unaware of its venomous nature, she later researched it and learned of the snake’s dangerous reputation. Footage showed her attempting to use an oar to return the snake to the water, revealing the pressing concern sparked by the encounter.
Captain Chad Steffen from Dana Wharf Sportsfishing and Whalewatching shared insights with CBS, noting that despite their venomous capabilities, yellow-bellied sea snakes are generally non-aggressive and infrequently bite. This rare sighting represents not only the first observation since 2018 but also the sixth confirmed instance of the snake’s presence in California since 1972, according to reptile expert Greg Pauly from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
The unusual appearance of the snake can be attributed to the ongoing Super El Niño phenomenon, which is currently altering marine ecosystems along the coast. A report from Surfer dated August 10 anticipated this major reshuffling of marine life, asserting that warmer Pacific waters would likely attract tropical and subtropical species to the Californian shoreline.
Douglas McCauley, the director of the Benioff Ocean Initiative at the University of California, Santa Barbara, remarked earlier in July that an influx of unique tropical marine life could be expected due to these warmer ocean temperatures. McCauley’s comments were echoed by observations of other unusual marine species making their way to southern California, such as hammerhead sharks and bluefin tuna.
Reflecting on the sighting, Aguilar expressed a newfound sense of caution towards the ocean’s depths. “You don’t really know what’s in there,” she remarked. The discovery serves as a reminder of the unknown and often hazardous creatures that inhabit the waters.
While Aguilar had reached out to the Newport Bay Conservancy for further comments on this extraordinary event, a response had not yet been received at the time of reporting.
