Wife and Mother of 3 Dies After Becoming Stranded in Snowstorm While Hiking in Washington

A tragic incident unfolded in the Enchantments region of Leavenworth, Washington, where 45-year-old Sybil Claborn from Oklahoma City lost her life after being stranded in a snowstorm while hiking with her husband. The pair encountered severe weather on 13 September, leading to a series of unfortunate events that culminated in her untimely death.

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office reported that the couple found themselves in a dire situation at an elevation of 7,000 to 8,000 feet, approximately 8 to 10 miles from the nearest trailhead. They had set out for their hike without adequate supplies for an overnight stay and became trapped in the storm as conditions deteriorated rapidly.

Claborn’s husband made a distress call through a text to 911 at about 5:26 PM local time, indicating that his wife was unable to move and that he could not carry her to safety. The snow had accumulated significantly, with reports stating they were surrounded by roughly 1 to 2 feet of snowfall. Despite having an emergency blanket, their clothing was soaked, leaving them both vulnerable to the cold.

As the gravity of their situation became evident, rescuers faced challenges in reaching the couple due to the extreme weather. Initially, a helicopter was dispatched, but the hazardous conditions rendered aerial operations impossible. In response, the Chelan County Mountain Rescue began planning a ground effort, hoping for an improvement in weather conditions.

By 6:51 PM, the Sheriff’s Office initiated a request for a hoist-capable helicopter, but it was not until around 8 PM that an Army helicopter was sent from Yakima, only to be thwarted by continuing adverse conditions. As the hours passed, Claborn’s condition reportedly worsened, prompting further concerns regarding her safety.

Rescue teams finally reached the couple around 3:30 AM on 14 September, where they confirmed the heartbreaking news that Sybil Claborn had succumbed. Her husband was discovered in a state of severe hypothermia but was stabilised by rescuers and later transported to Cascade Medical Center for treatment.

A recovery operation for Claborn’s body commenced shortly after her passing, with a coroner’s investigation into her death already underway. The distressing outcome has left her family, including three young daughters, grappling with an unimaginable loss. The community has rallied around the family, contributing to a GoFundMe campaign that aims to provide support during this challenging time.

Friends described Sybil as a devoted wife and an incredible mother, highlighting her unwavering love for her family. The fundraiser reflected on her character, stating she was the type of friend who made everyone around her feel cherished. As her husband, Justin, returns to Oklahoma City and begins his recovery, he is also faced with the daunting task of caring for their daughters while mourning the loss of his partner.

As of now, the GoFundMe campaign has raised over £66,000 from an initial target of £100,000, illustrating the profound impact Sybil had on her community and the love that surrounds her family. The Washington Trail Association has emphasised the need for proper preparation and equipment for those venturing into the Enchantments, a region known for its challenging hikes.
