**Passenger Arrested for Attempting to Sneak Knife Through Airport Security Hidden in Flashlight**

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently reported an unusual incident at Tampa International Airport (TPA) where officers uncovered a knife concealed within a baseball bat-shaped flashlight inside a passenger’s carry-on luggage. The discovery raised serious security concerns and led to the arrest of the individual involved.

The TSA shared the details of the incident on their official Instagram account, highlighting the attempt to smuggle the prohibited item under the guise of a seemingly innocuous flashlight. In a post dated 17 September, the agency included images of the flashlight along with the knife, warning other travellers against similar antics. “NOT a HIT in any carry-on bag,” read the caption, emphasising that such items should be placed in checked baggage instead.

In line with TSA regulations, knives—including any form of blade such as pocket knives or Swiss Army knives—are strictly banned from carry-on luggage. These items are only permitted in checked bags, where they must be securely wrapped to prevent harm to baggage handlers and screeners. The consequences for disregarding this rule can be severe, with penalties reaching up to £13,500 per violation.

The post featured various photographs, including a side-by-side comparison of the baseball bat-shaped flashlight next to a ruler, emphasising its considerable size. Images showed how the knife could be easily concealed within the gadget, designed to be discreet and easy to remove.

The TSA credited officer Andrew Carter, who has been with the agency since December 2022, for spotting the irregularity while monitoring the X-ray machine. His keen observation skills led him to collaborate with Supervisory TSA Officer Michael Slaughter, who boasts nearly 22 years of experience in screening. Together, they discovered a “mass” hidden beneath the lining of the traveller’s bag.

“I opened the bag’s lining and found a toiletry kit alongside the baseball bat-style flashlight,” Slaughter explained. Upon further inspection, he noticed a line on the shaft of the device, which allowed him to twist the handle and reveal the concealed four-inch double-edged knife.

Initially, the passenger claimed to be unaware of the knife’s presence in his bag. However, after law enforcement intervened, he admitted to hiding the blade under the lining to “save space” in his carry-on. Despite the passenger’s attempt to circumvent security, he did not go unpunished; he was arrested and was not permitted to continue his journey.

“Passengers who reflect on their journeys may voluntarily surrender prohibited items, still being allowed to proceed with their trips. However, law enforcement decisions are made independently and depend on multiple factors, including the specifics of the item, the passenger’s actions or statements, local laws, and officer discretion,” explained Steven Jacaruso, Acting TPA TSA Deputy Assistant Federal Security for Screening.

The TSA’s Instagram post attracted a wave of comments from perplexed users expressing incredulity at the lengths some individuals go to in attempting to carry weapons onto aircraft. One commenter questioned the rationale behind the passenger’s actions, suggesting that anyone needing a knife could easily buy one upon arrival at their destination.
