In an unusual twist of fate, Canadian filmmaker Matt Aitia’s emerald-hued ear mark has captured widespread attention on social media. The 29-year-old director from Toronto recently unveiled the shocking truth behind the green discolouration that had puzzled him for nearly two decades, which was initially thought to be scar tissue. A routine dental appointment turned his life around, as an X-ray revealed the marking’s real origin: an earring backing lodged beneath his skin since childhood.

Matt’s journey began in 2006 when he was only ten years old. During a trip to the mall with his father, he was enticed into a piercing studio. “Like every kid, I wanted to look cool,” he recounted, successfully persuading his dad to agree to the piercing. After signing a consent form, Aitia underwent the procedure, leaving the store with an inexpensive stud in his ear. However, his excitement was short-lived, as he faced an unexpected fallout merely two days later.

While in class, he experienced intense pain and noticed blood dripping from the piercing. The shocking incident led Aitia to faint, and he realised then that a future in medicine was not for him. Soon afterwards, he detected a peculiar green colouration forming around the piercing site. Consultation with a doctor confirmed his worst fears: it was merely scar tissue, and little could be done about it at that point. Despite this explanation, the green mark persisted, becoming ever more prominent over time, especially as more people began to notice it.
“The constant questioning became unbearable,” Aitia said, recalling how uncomfortable it was to explain his perplexing condition continually. Despite seeking multiple opinions from medical professionals, he heard the same diagnosis: scar tissue. The prospect of costly plastic surgery loomed large, leading him to choose acceptance over treatment. Friends and family, however, remained intrigued, some even attempting to remove the oddity themselves, convinced it was merely a blackhead.
It wasn’t until Aitia visited a new dentist during a routine cleaning that everything changed. Following basic procedures, a technician conducted a panoramic X-ray, and unexpectedly, Aitia was asked whether he had any piercings. “At first, I thought they were referring to the green mark,” he explained, but it turned out that the X-ray revealed much more. The technician pointed to an image showing a distinct earring backing lodged in his ear, confirming his suspicions after two long decades.
Aitia expressed his disbelief and relief in discovering the true nature of his green ear. The mysterious mark that had overshadowed his youth now had an explanation. Reflecting on the revelation, he noted that the sensation of a hard mass beneath his skin made sense upon connecting it with the earring backing. “Ironically, now that I know what it is, it feels more painful to touch,” he added.
Fueled by curiosity and encouraged by friends, Aitia decided to share his story online, which blossomed into a viral sensation. Remarkably, former classmates reached out, reminiscing about the ‘legendary green ear’. Aitia was taken aback by the level of attention it garnered, especially when he discovered that many others had experienced similar situations. “It’s comforting to know I’m not alone,” he remarked.
The interest surrounding his case also led to unexpected opportunities. Renowned cosmetic surgeon Dr. Rui Han Liu, upon seeing Aitia’s videos, offered his assistance. He proposed that the green discolouration might be treatable through a series of laser therapies, but first and foremost, they needed to address the underlying foreign object. Scheduled for removal on September 18, Aitia will brave the procedure despite his childhood aversion to medical sights.
In a twist of irony, he may even transform the intriguing saga into a short film. “This saga serves as a reminder of how choices made at a young age can lead to unforeseen consequences,” Aitia reflected. “It’s likely not the last piercing I regret, so perhaps I should heed some sage advice from our mothers a bit more.” As he prepares for the next chapter in what has become an incredible personal story, Aitia remains optimistic for the future.
