Boy, 13, Killed After Being Struck by Vehicle While Walking Toward Overpass, 2 Other Teens Injured

Tragedy struck Portland, Maine, on September 12, when a car collision resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy and left two high school students with serious injuries. The incident occurred as a group of teenagers attempted to cross the road near an I-95 overpass, leading to a heartbreaking loss for the local community.

The deceased, identified as Abdulrahman Mohammed, was pronounced dead at the scene. The identification was confirmed by Diane Nadeau, the superintendent of Scarborough School District. She described Abdulrahman as a “friendly, fun-loving person with a big personality,” emphasising the profound impact his loss will have on those who knew him.

According to a statement from the Portland Police Department (PPD), the incident occurred when Abdulrahman and two others—aged 14 and 15—“entered the roadway abruptly,” resulting in them being struck by a vehicle operated by a 48-year-old man. The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center for assessment. At present, he is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation, and no charges have yet been filed.

Following the incident, the two other boys involved were transported to the Maine Medical Center with serious injuries; the condition of both has not been publicly disclosed. Fortunately, other teenagers who were part of the group at the time were not harmed.

In response to this tragic event, the Scarborough School District has activated its crisis response team to support students and staff. The district has outlined a plan to provide counselling for those affected, implementing small group meetings with professionals to help students cope with the emotional fallout from the incident. Superintendent Nadeau expressed her condolences and highlighted the district’s commitment to providing support during this difficult time.

Meanwhile, the two injured students are enrolled at Deering High School, part of the Portland Public Schools district. Superintendent Ryan Scallon also reached out to the community, sharing heartfelt sentiments regarding Abdulrahman’s untimely passing. “Our thoughts and hearts are with these students, their families, and all who have been touched by this tragedy,” he noted in his message.

As the investigation continues, the PPD has not released additional details. Their spokesperson did not provide further comments regarding the progression of the case, indicating that more information may be available as inquiries advance.
