Travis Barker, the renowned drummer of Blink-182, recently shared a poignant reflection on his journey to veganism, shedding light on his commitment to animal welfare and how it influences his family’s lifestyle. In an exclusive interview, Barker recounted the moment he made the decision to stop consuming meat, a conscious choice he made at the tender age of 13.

It was during a Thanksgiving dinner that Barker realised he could no longer partake in the meat dishes that were traditionally served. Despite the strict upbringing enforced by his father—who insisted that all food on the plate must be eaten—Barker found himself hiding meat in his pockets in a bid to avoid eating it. “Eventually I got caught,” he admitted. “My mum was like, ‘Why is there always ham in your pocket?’”

This turning point in his life was marked by a developing awareness of the connection between animal cruelty and the food on his plate. “Once I figured out I was eating pig and cow, it was done,” Barker revealed. This realisation set him on a path towards a plant-based diet, which has become a core part of his values and professional pursuits.

Currently, Barker is an active advocate for animal rights, starring in a new campaign for Humane World for Animals. This initiative encourages people to make small yet impactful changes that can benefit animals. “There’s so much individuals can do, starting with where you adopt pets from, supporting shelters, using cruelty-free products, and avoiding animal-sourced materials like leather and fur,” he explained. Barker believes that these initiatives can significantly contribute to reducing animal suffering.
Even though Barker is profoundly dedicated to a vegan lifestyle, he acknowledges that it’s not necessary for everyone to go completely meat-free. “Starting with just one plant-based meal a week is fantastic,” he advised, encouraging others to explore vegan dining options. He specifically mentioned Crossroads Kitchen, a renowned vegan restaurant that surprises patrons with the quality of its plant-based menu, noting that it doesn’t even label its dishes as vegan.
At home, Barker raises his two-year-old son, Rocky Thirteen Barker, on a vegan diet. He noted that while his wife, Kourtney Kardashian Barker, and older children have varying degrees of commitment to veganism, they all partake in vegan meals together several times a week. “Rocky loves vegan sushi and gluten-free vegan options,” Barker shared, highlighting the appealing alternatives available for children. He is hopeful that his son will eventually come to understand the ethical dimensions behind food choices, much like he did.
The drummer emphasised the importance of leading by example in parenting, stating, “What Rocky eats and the products in our home are significantly influenced by how he’s been raised.” He is conscious about fostering an environment that encourages awareness about animal welfare, yet he remains non-judgmental towards friends and family who choose to eat meat. “When Rocky is older, he will make his own choices. I prefer to inspire rather than preach,” Barker noted.
The musician’s advocacy work extends beyond dietary choices, also focusing on family dynamics and personal growth. He recently released a documentary titled *Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear*, which has received widespread acclaim for its honest exploration of his life experiences. Barker expressed gratitude for the positive feedback, stating that it’s rewarding when people reach out about how the film has inspired them to improve their lives.
In light of his various initiatives and personal commitments, Barker concluded the interview with a simple yet profound message: “Just do good. That’s the move.” It is clear that Travis Barker is dedicated not only to his music career but also to a greater cause, using his platform to advocate for kindness and compassion towards animals and encouraging conscientious choices among his followers.
