**Tragic Loss of Minnesota Pastor Following Spinal Injury on Family Cruise**

Stephen Junker, a respected pastor known for his vibrant sermons and kindness, has sadly passed away at the age of 58 after suffering a severe spinal cord injury while on a family cruise in Italy. His family confirmed that he died on September 4, following a tragic incident that occurred during his son’s wedding trip.

On August 16, while aboard the Sun Princess cruise ship, Junker fell into the pool and nearly drowned. The circumstances of the incident have led to concerns, prompting his loved ones to set up a GoFundMe campaign to cover his medical expenses. According to the fundraising page, he was found face down and unresponsive, leading to immediate intervention from the Italian Coast Guard, who rushed him to a hospital in Naples for urgent care.

Diagnostic assessments revealed that Junker had sustained a critical compression of his spinal cord at the C3–C4 vertebrae, which necessitated emergency surgery to address the damage. Following this operation, doctors informed his family that if he survived, he would face the prospect of quadriplegia. Additionally, he developed a multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection in his lungs, likely a complication from the drowning incident.

Although he subsequently received treatment at the esteemed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, efforts to save him ultimately proved unsuccessful. His family expressed deep gratitude for the “world-class care” he received and for the support from the community through their fundraising effort. As of now, the GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly £28,000, surpassing its initial target.

In a touching tribute on their page, family members shared the moment of his passing: “At 6:33 PM today, Steve went to be with Jesus. He was surrounded by his wife, children, parents, and friends.” They also thanked those who contributed to the fundraiser and reassured supporters that every possible effort was made to assist him during his ordeal.

Stephen Junker was more than just a pastor; he touched countless lives through his dedication to his faith and community. Originally a pharmacist, Junker transformed his career after earning his degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He later attended the Lutheran Brethren Seminary in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, before becoming a beloved pastor at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon.

His sermons were often characterised by an animated delivery style, and he was known for his genuine conversations on various topics. Friends and congregation members highlighted his readiness to offer help, whether through spiritual counsel or practical support. He was often seen with tools at the ready, reflecting his willingness to assist anyone in need.

In honour of Stephen Junker’s life, a visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on September 11 at Chippewa Lutheran Church, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. This gathering will provide an opportunity for the community to pay their respects and celebrate his contributions to their lives.
