A tragic incident occurred while a Nottinghamshire family was celebrating their anniversary in the Bahamas, with the loss of a devoted mother who drowned in an attempt to rescue her two sons from a strong current. Leanne Gregory, a resident of Stapleford, was found unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock on 20th October. At the time, she was enjoying a snorkelling trip with her husband, Nathan, and their children.

According to reports from the Royal Bahamas Police, the situation unfolded when the Gregory family was snorkelling together. As the children ventured into the water, they were caught in a strong current that swept them away from their initial position. In a heroic effort to save her sons, Leanne entered the water, but she too was ultimately pulled under by the powerful currents.

Nathan Gregory recounted the harrowing event, explaining that the entire ordeal lasted approximately ten minutes. He stated that both he and Leanne initially remained on the beach while their sons explored the shallow waters, and it was during this time that the children began to struggle. Alarmed, the parents rushed to help, but unfortunately, Leanne met with tragedy as she attempted to save her boys.
The couple was celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary, although their official milestone falls in December. Nathan described Leanne as the epitome of kindness and generosity, stating, “She was the perfect mother, the perfect wife, the foundation of our entire family.” The couple’s relationship spanned more than two decades, having first met in school at the tender age of four, and later becoming childhood sweethearts.
Following the news of Leanne’s untimely death, an outpouring of support has emerged, with nearly £18,000 raised through a GoFundMe campaign. This initiative aims to assist Nathan and their sons during this profoundly difficult time. In an update to supporters, Nathan expressed his immense gratitude, acknowledging that while Leanne’s absence has created an irreplaceable void in their lives, the community spirit and willingness to help has provided some comfort.
“Losing Leanne has left a hole in our lives that can never be filled,” Nathan remarked. “But seeing how many people have been touched by her bravery and the desire to support our family has been overwhelming.” He emphasized his hope to ensure their sons feel secure and supported as they navigate life after losing their mother.
While the Royal Bahamas Police indicated that an autopsy would be conducted, they stated that foul play is not suspected in the incident. The local authorities have been involved in the investigation, with further details likely to emerge following the autopsy results.
The Gregory family received kind support from many, including Royal Caribbean and Virgin Airlines, who assisted them in returning home after the tragic event. Nathan praised their efforts, stating that their compassion and help made an unbearable journey more manageable.
As friends, family, and strangers rally around Nathan and his sons, they aim to honour Leanne’s legacy. Her husband concluded with a heartfelt message to those who have contributed to the fundraiser: “Thank you for helping us honour Leanne and for showing my boys that they are surrounded by so much love and support in this too difficult time.”
