Authorities in Lebanon, New Hampshire, have issued a warning following a series of concerning animal attacks in the Centerra Park area. Since Sunday, August 30, police have reported three incidents involving an aggressive creature that has left the community on edge.
Lebanon Police Chief Phillip Roberts expressed alarm over the incidents, noting that an animal attacking humans is often a sign of distress or illness, with rabies being a significant concern. “It’s concerning because of the animal attacking people. That’s usually indicative of something being wrong with the animal,” he remarked. Witnesses have described the animal as potentially being a gray fox or a fisher—a member of the weasel family—but this has yet to be confirmed.
One of the incidents was captured on video, which has since been shared with the public. The footage depicts the unidentified creature charging out of a grassy area towards a parking lot, where it can be seen lunging at a driver who had just exited their vehicle. As the driver attempts to fend off the animal, it manages to grab an item from their hands before targeting the person’s leg. Eventually, the driver manages to throw the animal away, but the aggressive behaviour leaves a lingering sense of fear.
The reported attacks have raised significant concern among residents and local authorities alike. The Lebanon Police Department has urged everyone to exercise caution when walking in or near wooded or brush-covered areas, as these are likely habitats for wildlife. They have also encouraged individuals to remain vigilant and to contact the police if they observe any wild animal acting aggressively or unusually.
In addition to the immediate danger posed by the animal, officials emphasised the potential health risks associated with bites or scratches. Rabies can be transmitted to humans through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, as well as through contact with infected saliva entering open wounds or mucous membranes.
Symptoms of rabies can be severe and include fever, nausea, hallucinations, and even paralysis. Those who are bitten or scratched are advised to wash the area thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention to ascertain whether rabies post-exposure treatment is required.
The Lebanon Police Department is actively monitoring the situation in Centerra Park and coordinating with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department as necessary. Chief Roberts reiterated the importance of public safety in light of the situation, stating, “We will continue to monitor the area, and we urge people to keep their distance from this animal.”
