Tragedy Strikes Celebratory Trip in Nepal as Couple Goes Missing Amid Floods

A joyous celebration has turned into a heart-wrenching ordeal for a family from the United States, as Raghu Rajan and Archana Suresh went missing in the devastating floods that recently swept through Nepal. The couple had travelled to Nepal from their home in Murphy, Texas, to mark two significant milestones: Rajan’s 50th birthday and their 25th wedding anniversary.
Divya Chandrashekar, the couple’s sister-in-law, described their excitement prior to the trip. “They were so eager, and all of us shared in their joy,” she said. Both Rajan, aged 50, and Suresh, aged 46, work in the IT sector and are known for their love of the outdoors. The couple took a year to prepare for the trip, which included extensive training in hiking and endurance walking, as they intended to trek near Mount Kailash, a site of immense religious importance situated on the border of Nepal and Tibet.
Family members had been closely following the couple’s journey through updates shared via WhatsApp. They sent back an assortment of photos and videos, capturing the beautiful landscapes and their experiences. However, the cheerful updates abruptly halted in the wake of a catastrophic natural disaster.
The distresses of the situation escalated dramatically when severe flooding hit the region, claiming over a thousand lives and leaving thousands more unaccounted for. The U.S. State Department has confirmed that around 75 Americans, including Rajan and Suresh, are among those missing after the deluge.
Chandrashekar recounted her husband, Deepak Rajan, having a lengthy FaceTime call with his brother just days before the catastrophe. During the call, they admired the hotel where the couple was staying, unaware of the impending disaster. “It was an amazing trip,” Chandrashekar reflected, “until it happened.”
Despite extensive search efforts, there have been no signs of Rajan and Suresh in any local hospitals. This uncertainty has left their family in a state of despair and anguish. “We are hoping that we find them,” Chandrashekar stated firmly. “We want to bring them back home to their children,” who are currently living in the United States.
The trauma of the situation has compelled Chandrashekar’s husband to travel to India to support their parents, who are anxiously awaiting news. The families have resorted to prayer as they cope with the emotional strain of the ongoing search and uncertainty. “Both sets of parents back home are praying and holding prayer meets,” said Chandrashekar, “all hoping for a miracle that they both come back safe and sound.”
Chandrashekar expressed particular concern for the couple’s college-age children, who are grappling with the emotional turmoil of the situation. “We are all in pain and distress,” she articulated. “We just want to see them together as a family again.”
As rescue operations continue in Nepal, the families of those missing remain steadfast in their hope. They cling to the belief that their loved ones managed to find safety amidst the chaos. With each passing day, they await clarity and resolution in what started as a trip filled with joy and celebration.
