The incident occurred on Saturday, 30 August, around 6:30 p.m. near Fort De Soto, and has left his loved ones grappling with the overwhelming aftermath of his sudden loss.

According to his cousin, Marianne Matheson Shuman, the family’s life has been “turned upside down” since the untimely death of the 41-year-old, who was spending an extra day in Florida after a work conference to reconnect with a childhood friend. Marianne recounted how Steve had initially checked the weather with friends before deciding to venture out on the water. However, as dark clouds gathered, they chose to return to shore. On their return journey, they encountered the distressing sight of a boat in need of assistance.
Steve, known for his selfless nature, immediately stopped to help, an action that tragically led to his demise. Marianne reflected on her cousin’s character, describing him as someone who was always eager to lend a hand to those in need, including strangers. It was this willingness to assist others that ultimately led him into danger during a storm.
Witnesses, including off-duty paramedics who were nearby, attempted to render aid as soon as the incident occurred, but his family believes he was “killed on impact”. The sudden loss has left his immediate family, including his wife Abbie and their four children, struggling to come to terms with the reality of his passing. Marianne conveyed the immense difficulty the children have in understanding their father’s absence, stating, “They talk about him and they know that he’s in heaven. It’s hard for them to grasp the idea, but they know.”
In a poignant reflection, Marianne recalled her 9-year-old nephew’s heart-wrenching response to the news of his father’s death: “Who’s going to play catch with me?” This question stands as a testament to the strong bond that Steve had cultivated with his children through his active involvement in their lives. Marianne emphasised his commitment to family, stating, “He was one of those that dropped everything for his kids.”
In response to the family’s immediate financial needs, a friend of Steve’s has initiated a GoFundMe campaign. As of 2 September, the fund has raised over £91,000, showing the community’s support during this incredibly difficult time.
Reflecting on the last moments she shared with Steve, Marianne shared a personal memory of a Sunday dinner held just a week prior to the tragedy. She recalled how he had conveyed his affection towards his family that evening, frequently expressing his love and giving hugs. “He just was saying that so much,” she remembered.
Steve was described as a “man of faith” and a dedicated community member who actively participated in coaching local youth football teams. Marianne painted a picture of a man who was lively and full of warmth, noting that he had the capacity to brighten any room with his smile.
“We’re going to feel this loss deeply for a long time,” Marianne expressed. “He just had a big light about him that he shared with everybody he came in contact with.” The profound sense of grief is palpable within the close-knit family and community that Steve touched throughout his life.
