According to reports, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has concluded its investigation into the circumstances surrounding Malachi’s drowning and has submitted the case to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office for further review. As of August 28, no criminal charges had been filed, and officials have not disclosed any potential suspects or specific allegations that may arise from the investigation.
The incident occurred while Malachi was enjoying a playdate, being supervised by a trusted adult alongside several other children. Grace LeBlanc declined to disclose the supervisor’s identity, stating that she wishes to protect their privacy during this difficult time. She has made it clear that she opposes any criminal charges, asserting that she was unaware of the sheriff’s office’s intention to pursue legal action until journalists reached out for comment.
Malachi’s parents were not present at the pool when the emergency unfolded. Reports indicate that after he was found unresponsive, first responders initiated CPR before transporting him to North Central Baptist Hospital. Tragically, medical staff later confirmed that Malachi was brain dead and unable to breathe independently. Grace recounted that her family often spent time swimming together, emphasising how much Malachi, the youngest of four children, adored the water. “I’m convinced that he thought he could swim because he would try to get in the water all the time without his floaties,” she told local reporters.
Following the devastating news, Grace and her partner, Myron LeBlanc, were approached by the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance, who suggested the possibility of organ donation. Grace initially hesitated at the thought. However, with her partner’s encouragement, she reconsidered, believing that Malachi’s organs could provide hope to other children in need. “If God wasn’t going to give us the miracle that we’re praying for, then this can be a miracle for other children,” Myron reassured her.
Ultimately, Malachi’s heart, kidneys, and liver were donated to three young patients awaiting transplants in Texas, making him only the second pediatric organ donor at North Central Baptist Hospital. To commemorate Malachi’s generous act, nurses placed his handprint on a ceiling tile above their workstation, alongside the handprint of the hospital’s first paediatric donor.
Grace LeBlanc hopes her son will be remembered not for his tragic end but for his infectious spirit and the lives he has touched. “He always knew how to make you feel beautiful,” she reflected. “He loved to say ‘I love you,’ and he meant it when he said it.” Finding solace in her faith, Grace remarked, “Knowing that I will see my son again has really carried me through this. I know that right now, where he’s at, he’s being loved on more than we could ever love on him.”
