Louisiana Man Arrested After Telling Airline Employee ‘I Have a Bomb’ Just Before Boarding Flight

A 33-year-old man was detained at Miami International Airport after allegedly making a bomb threat while preparing to board an American Airlines flight to Cuba. The incident occurred on 31 August when Yoel Guevara-Crespo reportedly told a gate agent that he had an explosive device in his luggage.

As per the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Guevara-Crespo was approached by a ticket counter agent who was conducting standard security checks. During this exchange, when asked if he had any lithium batteries or incendiary devices in his bag, he allegedly responded with, “No, but I have a bomb.” This remark quickly raised alarms at the airport.

According to the report, after hearing his comment, the gate agent informed him that he would not be permitted to fly and indicated that she would escalate the matter to a supervisor. Following this, Guevara-Crespo reportedly claimed that his statement had been a joke. However, the seriousness of such remarks at an airport cannot be overstated.

In response to the potentially alarming situation, deputies from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Airport Operations Bureau were dispatched to the scene. Guevara-Crespo was taken into custody without any incident, reflecting the high level of alertness and preparedness of airport security personnel in handling threats.

Subsequent inspections of his luggage did not uncover any explosives. A trained K-9 was brought in to conduct a sweep, which also yielded no dangerous items. Despite Guevara-Crespo’s insistence that he was joking, he was charged with making a false bomb report, a second-degree felony, due to the serious implications of his statement.

During a formal interview with the authorities, Guevara-Crespo allegedly confessed to the actions that led to his arrest. Following the completion of legal procedures, he was held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

The following day, Guevara-Crespo appeared before a judge, who determined there was sufficient evidence to uphold the charges against him. His bail was set at $2,500, according to local news reports.

Following the resolution of the situation, American Airlines was able to resume its normal operations. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the airport was not significantly affected by the incident, emphasising the importance of stringent security measures in airports.

A spokesperson for American Airlines has been contacted for further comments regarding the event, although no official statement has been issued at this time. The incident serves as a reminder of the strict regulations concerning security at airports, as well as the zero-tolerance policy towards any threats that could jeopardize passenger safety.
