Recent research has unveiled a startling public health issue concerning the farming community worldwide, revealing that nearly half of the global farming population suffers from pesticide poisoning each year. This alarming statistic suggests a significant health crisis affecting farmers and raises concerns about agricultural practices reliant on hazardous chemicals.

The investigation, published in *Frontiers in Public Health*, relied on data from the World Health Organization (WHO) to track instances of unintentional acute pesticide poisoning (UAPP). Researchers estimate that there are around 369,632 cases of UAPP among farmers annually, leading to approximately 9,182 fatalities. With around 934 million farmers worldwide, this data translates to an estimated 402 to 433 million individuals estimated to be poisoned each year, contributing to around 11,000 deaths in total.
The regions most severely impacted by pesticide poisoning were identified as Southern Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Africa. These areas are witnessing a systemic public health crisis, as revealed by Dr Sheila Willis, Head of International Programmes at the Pesticide Action Network UK. Dr Willis noted that significant underreporting is a major issue driven largely by limited healthcare access. Many healthcare systems are ill-equipped to recognise or record cases of pesticide poisoning, leading to a lack of awareness regarding this pressing issue.
The researchers underscored the urgent need for preventive measures that specifically address the use of pesticides deemed “extremely hazardous” or “highly hazardous.” They recommended that such substances should only be handled by trained individuals to mitigate the risks associated with their use. In addition, employers ought to be mandated to supply adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) to their workers, reinforcing the necessity for enhanced workplace safety in agricultural settings.
While the number of fatalities is substantial, experts like Susan Haffmans, Senior Adviser on Pesticides and International Cooperation at PAN Germany, emphasised that the overwhelming prevalence of non-fatal poisonings should not be overlooked. Haffmans stated that focusing solely on death rates is insufficient, and the high incidence of non-fatal poisonings indicates a broader crisis requiring immediate attention. She urged systemic improvements in tracking pesticide poisoning cases, arguing that it is unacceptable for those who cultivate our food to suffer harm from toxic chemicals.
The findings from this study highlight the critical need to explore alternatives to chemical pesticides. Researchers are advocating for the promotion of safer, chemical-free crop protection methods to reduce dependency on harmful substances that jeopardize the health of farmers and their families. This involves rethinking agricultural practices and exploring natural and sustainable methods of pest control.

Policymakers and agricultural stakeholders must prioritise the health and safety of farmers by implementing stricter regulations on pesticide use and enhancing monitoring systems for pesticide poisoning cases.
