A tragic incident involving a turtle has raised alarm in Deer Park, New York, following the discovery of the animal trapped in a metal cage submerged in Geiger Lake. The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) announced the incident on their social media platforms, labelling it an appalling act of animal cruelty.

On August 23, park rangers from the Town of Babylon were responding to another complaint concerning e-bikes at Geiger Lake Memorial Park when they stumbled upon the turtle. The animal was found secured inside a zip-tied metal cage, submerged under water. According to the SPCA, the turtle also had a fishhook lodged in its mouth, which added to its distressing condition. The rangers acted swiftly to remove the cage from the lake.
Despite immediate attention, the turtle was unable to survive its entrapment. It was taken to West Islip Veterinary Hospital for emergency care, but sadly succumbed to its injuries shortly after arrival. A spokesperson from the Suffolk County SPCA confirmed the turtle’s demise on September 1, expressing their disappointment over the incident.

The SPCA has since announced a reward of $2,000 for any information that could lead to the identification and prosecution of the individual or individuals responsible for this cruel act.
