A North Carolina community is grappling with profound grief following the untimely passing of 13-year-old Caden Sorrell, who tragically died after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest during a football practice session. Caden’s family revealed that the medical emergency occurred on Sunday, August 30, at Northwest Guilford Middle School in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In a heartfelt message shared via social media, the school’s principal, CeCe Matson, expressed the school’s sorrow over the loss of one of their students. “Today, our Northwest Middle School family is grieving the loss of one of our students. There are no easy words to make sense of losing a child, and our hearts are with the family, friends, classmates, and all who loved him,” she stated.
Caden was reportedly taken to Cone Hospital where he received urgent medical attention, including the use of a heart pump and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a critical procedure that supports failing heart and lung functions. Despite efforts to save him, the family said the damage was too significant, leading to a tragic outcome.
The news of Caden’s passing has profoundly affected not only his family but also the wider community. Caden was a twin and had three other siblings, all of whom now face an unimaginable loss. The family shared their heartbreak via a GoFundMe page established to support them during this difficult time, highlighting the profound impact of Caden’s absence.
Though the exact cause of Caden’s cardiac arrest has not been publicly disclosed, his family mentioned that doctors suspect he might have had an underlying genetic condition that could be linked to his sudden health crisis. In response to this tragedy, the Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) of Northwest Guilford Middle School has set up a memorial space on campus for students, faculty, and community members to pay their respects.
