NASA’s Artemis II mission has achieved a significant milestone in space exploration, representing the first crewed lunar endeavour in over five decades. On August 28, crew members were celebrated for their groundbreaking mission during a ceremony where President Donald Trump presented them with the prestigious Congressional Space Medal of Honor. The recipients of this honour were mission commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. This recognition highlights their extraordinary contributions to space exploration and natural welfare, as established by legislation passed by Congress in 1969.


The Artemis II mission was particularly noteworthy not only for being NASA’s first moon mission since Apollo 17 but also for surpassing previous distance records set by the Apollo 13 crew in 1970. While Apollo 13 reached a maximum distance of 248,655 miles from Earth, the Artemis II crew pushed the boundaries further, travelling an impressive 252,760 miles from their home planet.
Although the Artemis II mission did not involve a moon landing, its primary objective was to test advanced technology in preparation for future lunar landings and deep space exploration. The mission commenced on April 1, 2026, with the spacecraft successfully entering lunar orbit on April 6, before making its return journey and splashing down on April 10. This remarkable undertaking represents a collaborative effort, building on decades of human endeavour in space exploration.
