A deputy in Florida who was recently celebrated as the “2025 Deputy of the Year” has resigned amid serious allegations of misconduct, including improper use of police technology and concerning personal behaviour. Michael Fultz, formerly of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, left his position shortly before he was set to be dismissed following an internal investigation that unveiled multiple issues with his conduct.

The trouble began when Fultz’s ex-girlfriend approached the sheriff’s office with various allegations on the same day he received his commendation. According to reports, her intent in coming forward was to highlight conduct that she believed violated departmental policies rather than to seek personal revenge. This revelation prompted the sheriff’s office to conduct an audit of its license-plate reader system, which unveiled that Fultz had improperly searched his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle registration while off duty. The investigation identified that Fultz classified the inquiry as an “investigation,” though he struggled to justify the necessity of this search, which was conducted before the commencement of his shift.
The Flock Safety cameras used in this incident have faced scrutiny recently, particularly after investigations revealed that numerous law enforcement officials had misused such systems for personal gain or inappropriately checked up on individuals. In response to these concerns, Flock has implemented new safeguards to ensure more stringent regulations on data access and usage.

In addition to the misuse of police technology, the investigation also explored allegations involving compromising photographs featuring Fultz. One claim involved images where he was said to have put a firearm in his ex-girlfriend’s mouth and aimed it at the back of her head during consensual sexual activity. Although she later described such behaviour as alarming and inappropriate for a law enforcement officer, Fultz maintained that the gun was his personal property. Investigators noted that the weapon appeared similar to a service firearm issued by the department.
Further disturbing claims emerged from screenshots taken during a FaceTime call, during which Fultz was alleged to have been engaged in a sexual act while in uniform inside his patrol vehicle. Despite denying the accusations, he admitted to investigators that he had been negligent in adhering to firearm safety protocols—a significant concern given his role as a deputy sheriff.

Two additional troubling images emerged during the inquiry; one showed him with a moustache styled to resemble that of Adolf Hitler while apparently performing a Nazi salute. Although Fultz acknowledged posing for the photograph, he refuted any accusations of racism, characterising the image as a misguided joke. Additionally, the investigation found texts in which he frequently used racially derogatory language. Fultz claimed that he grew up in a foster home with Black family members, suggesting that such language had been normalised in his upbringing, though he did concede that law enforcement officers should maintain professionalism in their communication.
The investigation also uncovered that Fultz had been stopped by law enforcement on multiple occasions for traffic violations. Notably, during one incident he was recorded travelling at 111 mph on his motorcycle, far exceeding legal limits. While he did not face arrest, the documentation was highlighted as a sign of poor judgement, particularly given Fultz’s role within the sheriff’s office.
Following the completion of the investigation, Sheriff Wayne Ivey determined that Fultz’s actions warranted termination, citing that the nature of his misconduct had undermined the public’s trust in law enforcement. In a memorandum, Ivey asserted that the deputy’s actions presented substantial risks to both the community and the reputation of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
Michael Fultz ultimately chose to resign, offering an apology for the “embarrassment and negative attention” his actions had generated. However, he also expressed disagreement with certain conclusions drawn during the investigation, asserting that not all allegations made by his ex-girlfriend were substantiated. He acknowledged, nonetheless, that he bore responsibility for his decisions and accepted the outcome of the proceedings.
The unfolding events illustrate the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in maintaining integrity and trust within the communities they serve. As technology evolves and scrutiny of police conduct increases, the necessity for adherence to ethical standards remains paramount.
