In an innovative approach to tackle a burgeoning problem in the Mediterranean, scientists have embarked on a project known as Octo-Blu, which seeks to fortify the native octopus population to address the surge of invasive blue crabs threatening local fisheries.

This initiative, launched in 2024, has so far seen the release of around 130,000 common octopus paralarvae—newly hatched and currently only a few millimetres in size—into the waters of the Adriatic Sea. These fragile creatures have been strategically placed near the coastline to grow and develop in an environment put under strain by the invasive crab species.


Blue crabs, a species that wreaked havoc on Italy’s seafood industry over the past decade, have caused financial deficits amounting to tens of millions of euros. Increasingly aggressive and destructive, they have resulted in damaged fishing nets, devastation of clam beds, and closures of numerous fisheries along the Italian coastline. The influx of blue crabs, initially a species native to the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, is a consequence of their successful introduction into the Mediterranean over a century ago.
Antonio Casalini, an aquaculture research technician associated with the University of Bologna, which spearheads the Octo-Blu project in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna regional government, emphasised that the plan does not involve the introduction of an alien predator but rather aims to bolster the population of an established species. “We are not introducing a new species but working on strengthening the population of a native species already naturally present in the Adriatic,” he stated.
As the juvenile octopuses are slowly released into the sea, measures have been taken to ensure their survival. The research team has implemented artificial dens to provide shelter for these vulnerable creatures. The hope is that, once they reach maturity, each adult octopus can consume up to four blue crabs daily, providing a significant impact on the invasive crab population.
The project’s ambition emerges from an understanding of the life cycles of both the octopuses and the crabs. Under optimal conditions, these octopuses could potentially flourish, contributing to a natural equilibrium in the marine ecosystem. However, experts remain cautious. Gianluca Sarà, a marine ecologist from the University of Palermo who is not involved in the initiative, has described the strategy as “powerful” yet also noted that the actual outcomes may not necessarily yield substantial results.
Further complicating the project is the reality that octopus paralarvae have a remarkably high mortality rate, with approximately 99.9% of them expected to perish before reaching adulthood. The Octo-Blu initiative recognises this challenge, with Casalini clarifying that the objective is not to eradicate blue crabs entirely but to keep their population under control. This includes complementary measures, such as increased fishing of the crab species itself.
As these young octopuses begin their journey into the larger marine environment, the response from local communities and stakeholders remains hopeful yet tentative. Many fishermen and conservationists are anxious to see whether this approach will make a meaningful difference to the marine ecosystem.
The initiative reflects a growing trend in environmental science towards leveraging native species as a means of restoring ecological balance, rather than relying on unfamiliar species that may exacerbate existing issues. By targeting the management of invasive populations through a familiar and natural predator, the Octo-Blu project highlights an intriguing effort to harmonise local aquaculture with regional biodiversity.
As monitoring continues and the project develops, experts will closely observe how effective these native octopuses can be in mitigating the challenges posed by invasive blue crabs and restoring the health of Mediterranean fisheries. The success of the Octo-Blu project could set a precedent for similar ecological interventions in various marine environments facing invasive species pressures.
