The Metropolitan Police Service has initiated a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) regarding its management of a letter from 2019, which contained serious allegations against Thomas Markle Sr., father of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. This self-referral comes in light of scrutiny over the decision not to inform other law enforcement agencies about the contents of the letter.

In a statement released on 29 October by Commander Adam Slonecki, head of the Metropolitan Police’s Protection Command, it was confirmed that the force had conducted a review concerning the handling of the allegations outlined in the letter sent to its Fixated Threats Assessment Centre. The letter reportedly flagged claims of criminal activity presumed to have occurred outside of the United Kingdom, instigating concern over public safety.
At the time the letter was received, it was communicated to the offices of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle purely for their awareness, but was unfortunately not forwarded to any other law enforcement bodies. Commander Slonecki stated, “Following that review, a voluntary referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct in respect of the decision not to inform other law enforcement agencies.” He further noted that there are plans to make additional referrals to relevant overseas law enforcement entities regarding the allegations.

The scandal gained recent traction when The Times reported on 26 October that the Metropolitan Police had been unable to locate the original letter. However, it was revealed that Meghan Markle had retained a copy of the document and had willingly shared it with police upon their request.
The contents of the letter, authored by Thomas Markle Sr.’s ex-wife, Roslyn Loveless, accused him of serious child sexual offences and suggested he could pose a security threat to the Duke and Duchess. The allegations included disturbing claims where Loveless purportedly recounted that Thomas Sr. had expressed interest in travelling to locations where the legal age of consent was notably low. Loveless passed away in 2024.
On 22 October, The Sun published a report stating that Thomas Markle Sr. was being investigated for alleged possession of child pornography, following claims from his son, Thomas Markle Jr., who asserted he had uncovered inappropriate material and alerted authorities. In a subsequent interview, Thomas Sr. acknowledged that he had paid for sex with adult women in the Philippines, while vehemently denying any involvement with individuals under the age of 18 or possessing any illegal materials.

Meghan Markle has since addressed these allegations, expressing distress and concern for any potential victims. In a statement to PEOPLE on 23 October, Meghan relayed that she had been made aware of troubling allegations against her father. She had previously been assured by law enforcement that the claims were being properly investigated. “In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police that made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father,” Meghan disclosed.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed receiving the letter containing allegations against Thomas Sr. in January 2019, following which representations have indicated a discrepancy in the timeline recounted by Meghan. She expressed deep distress in her statement over the unfolding events and stressed the necessity for the safety of children. The Duchess revealed that the distance she maintained from her father was ultimately to protect her children from potential harm.
Thomas Markle Sr.’s estrangement from Meghan has been longstanding, originating prior to her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018. His absence from the wedding had stemmed from various controversies, including staged paparazzi photos and ongoing health issues. Reports also allege that Meghan reached out to her father via letter during his hospitalisation in the Philippines following a serious leg amputation, indicating her awareness of the allegations against him.
This complex family dynamic remains laden with allegations that are deeply disturbing. Thomas Markle Sr.’s situation continues to elicit public interest, especially with respect to his daughter’s efforts to shield her own children from potential dangers. As investigations move forward, the hope persists that justice may prevail and ensure the safety of all involved, particularly vulnerable children.
As the Metropolitan Police navigates these troubled waters, the public awaits further developments, hoping for clarity and resolution amid this troubling family saga.
