At the tender age of five, Uhler encountered a near-drowning incident during a family fishing trip, when she slipped away from her father’s side and fell into a lake. Describing the traumatic moment, she vividly recalls sinking into the “murky green water”, a harrowing memory that remains etched in her mind. The last thought she had before losing consciousness was of her father’s disappointment, a stark reminder of the fragility of life.

Fortunately, her brother was nearby and managed to locate her in the cloudy water, pulling her to safety. Reflecting on that day nearly four decades later, Uhler acknowledges the significance of her family’s vigilance and the fact that her story had a fortunate outcome—a reality that is not always the case for others.
Fast forward to today, Uhler is not only a mother of three but also a designated advocate, committed to raising awareness around water safety across the United States. Holding the title of Miss Michigan USA 2026, she has seized the platform to tackle the alarming statistic that drowning is the leading cause of death among children aged four and under in America. Uhler states, “Drowning is preventable through layers of protection, safety gear, teaching children how to swim, and proper adult supervision.”
Her determination has led to her involvement with the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, where she has been acknowledged as their Water Safety Leader of the Year. Uhler collaborates with organisations such as Live Like Jake and Every Child a Swimmer, with the hope that her efforts can help reduce drowning incidents stemming from tragic circumstances.
A pivotal moment occurred in 2022 at a pool party, where her instincts were put to the test. Noticing a child motionless at the bottom of the pool, Uhler jumped in without hesitation. Despite not being CPR certified at the time, she remembered some techniques she had only seen on television. Thankfully, her quick thinking led to the child surfacing and vomiting out water, narrowly escaping a tragic fate. While the outcome was fortunate, the trauma of the event haunted her, compelling her to get CPR certified and commit to teaching swimming lessons in her community.
Uhler’s advocacy doesn’t stop there. Recognising the challenges parents face in ensuring constant supervision of their children, she has developed a “Water Watcher” card. This card is distributed in educational toolkits across the country, serving as a reminder for adults to focus fully on supervising children near water. This initiative promotes a culture of accountability, aiming to combat the common assumption that someone else is watching the children.
The guilt stemming from drowning incidents is a burden many carry, often leading to severe emotional and financial repercussions for families affected. Uhler emphasises the need for awareness, pointing out that drowning rarely resembles the chaotic scenes often portrayed in films. In reality, it is an eerily silent event that can occur within seconds, reinforcing the importance of dedicated vigilance.
If crowned Miss USA, Uhler hopes to pave the way for a new kind of representation, as she would be the first mother and married woman to hold the title, as well as the oldest winner to date. She expresses a deep connection to her family, who have been integral to her pageant journey. Their support has enabled her to intertwine her advocacy with her role in the pageant, demonstrating that her commitment to water safety goes hand in hand with her participation in this prestigious competition.
Through her journey, Amber Uhler aims not merely to win a title but to create a lasting impact, educating others about water safety and preventing tragedies that can stem from a moment of inattention. Her story is a testament to resilience and a reminder of the importance of vigilance, awareness, and education when it comes to protecting the lives of our loved ones around water.
