Busy Philipps has stepped in to help fellow celebrity Joe Amabile navigate the challenges of a brain tumour diagnosis, having faced a similar experience herself only months prior. Both individuals became connected through their shared circumstances after discovering abnormalities through Prenuvo scans, a non-invasive imaging technology designed to detect potential health issues.
Philipps, aged 47, announced her diagnosis of a grade 2 oligodendroglioma—a type of malignant yet highly treatable brain tumour—after a Prenuvo scan revealed the troubling lesion. Following her diagnosis, she underwent surgery to remove the tumour in March of this year.
In July, after Amabile, known as “Grocery Store Joe” from the Bachelor franchise, publicly shared his own brain tumour diagnosis through a social media post, Philipps felt compelled to reach out. Although she confessed to not being a fan of reality television, she found herself drawn in by the similarities between their situations. “Multiple people sent me his post from Instagram,” she recounted. “Same thing, dude. Prenuvo scan. They found a lesion on his brain.”
Taking the initiative, Philipps slid into Amabile’s direct messages, offering her support. “I said, ‘Hey! Multiple people sent me this. It’s not public knowledge yet, but I literally just went through the same exact thing,’” she explained. Recognising Amabile was based in New York, she extended her assistance, stating, “If you and your wife have any questions, I might be the perfect person for you to ask.”
Their connection grew as the pair communicated over the phone, with Philipps eventually introducing Amabile to her surgeon, Dr. John Golfinos of NYU Langone, who performed her surgery. “Now he’s going to get his surgery this coming week with them,” Philipps shared during her interview, affectionately referring to Amabile as her “brain tumour brother.”
On August 6, Amabile successfully underwent surgery with Dr. Golfinos and has since been on the road to recovery. Expressing his gratitude, he took to Instagram to thank the surgeon and his team. “A big thank you to Dr. Golfinos and his team at NYU Langone,” he wrote on August 12. In a subsequent Instagram Story, Amabile praised Philipps for her unwavering support, calling her “truly one of the kindest people I know.”
As she recuperates from her own surgeries, including an unexpected debridement procedure, Philipps expressed her feelings of gratitude for being alive. Reflecting on her health journey, she described the last six months as “the weirdest six months of my life.”
