A Michigan mother is facing serious charges after allegedly setting her house on fire with her three children inside, resulting in the tragic death of her 12-year-old daughter, Shamiya Stewart. The incident occurred in Grand Rapids, Mich., with the victim passing away two days after the alleged attack. Fortunately, her siblings, aged 10 and 7, managed to survive the ordeal. The mother, identified as 46-year-old Roconda Singleton, was taken into custody in connection with the incident, as reported by the Associated Press.

Singleton is accused of removing seven fire alarms from the home before igniting the fire, a disturbing detail revealed by Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom. The fire alarms were later discovered ringing inside a pillowcase in the backyard. Allegedly, Singleton’s motive was to prevent her children from escaping the burning house, creating a horrifying scene as the fire raged on and the children cried out for help.

It is reported that while the girls were desperately calling for assistance, Singleton remained outside the house, witnessing the tragic events unfold. During interrogation, she confessed to authorities that she initiated the fire using lighter fluid and a lighter, starting in the bathroom on the second floor before moving to the living room to further escalate the flames. Shockingly, Singleton admitted to carrying out these actions despite knowing her children were inside the home.
Following the incident, Singleton was initially charged with first-degree arson and three counts of child abuse. However, after Shamiya’s untimely death, she now faces an additional murder charge. Subsequently, during a court proceeding, a judge entered a not guilty plea on her behalf. As the case continues to unfold, details regarding legal representation and plea arrangements for the murder charge remain pending.
In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to honour Shamiya’s memory and provide support to her surviving siblings and father. The fundraiser highlights the bravery of the young girl’s siblings, particularly the 10-year-old who courageously rescued her younger sister from the flames by guiding her to safety. Shamiya is remembered for her spirited nature, having overcome significant challenges since birth, symbolising hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
The community has been left reeling from the heinous act allegedly perpetrated by a parent against their own children. The heartbreaking loss of Shamiya serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals, particularly children, from harm and ensuring their well-being. As investigations and legal proceedings progress, support and advocacy for the surviving children and affected family members are paramount to addressing the emotional and physical aftermath of such a traumatic event.
This devastating incident underscores the importance of recognising and reporting instances of child abuse or endangerment, emphasising the urgent need for intervention and protection of those at risk. The profound impact of such tragedies resonates deeply within communities, prompting reflection on ensuring the safety and welfare of individuals, especially children, who may be susceptible to harm or neglect. As the case unfolds in the judicial system, the pursuit of justice and accountability remains essential in upholding the rights and dignity of the victims and advocating for their well-being.
