In a shocking turn of events, a married couple has been arrested in Mexico in connection with the brutal murder of a California teacher. The arrest follows a lengthy eight-month investigation into the death of 37-year-old Geoffrey Bernardi, who was found severely beaten near a canal in December 2025.

Misty Gomez, 32, and her husband, Antonio Garcia, 40, were apprehended by U.S. Marshals on August 19. They were subsequently extradited to California, with police confirming their connection to Bernardi’s tragic demise. According to the Clovis Police Department, Gomez was romantically involved with Bernardi while still married to Garcia, complicating the familial dynamics at play.

Geoffrey Bernardi’s mother, Erin Adams, has expressed her disbelief and sorrow over the circumstances surrounding her son’s death. She revealed that her son and Gomez had only been dating for a few months, and he was unaware of her marital status. “The first time he went out with her, he told me, ‘I met the woman I’m going to marry,’” Adams recounted, underscoring the depth of her son’s feelings for Gomez.

Adams also shared that Gomez contacted her on the night of the incident to inform her that Bernardi had been attacked. Hours later, Gomez joined the family at his bedside, where she reportedly wept and expressed a desire to help find the perpetrator. Adams described this behaviour as a calculated act of deception, suggesting that Gomez was “playing a game” amidst the family’s grief.

The details surrounding Bernardi’s death are very distressing. He was discovered in a state that left him “beyond recognition” and subsequently succumbed to his injuries just days before his 38th birthday. In the immediate aftermath of the attack, the family began to suspect Gomez’s involvement in the incident, a notion that would later gain traction with law enforcement.

Law enforcement officials launched a thorough investigation that initially revealed the assault was not a random act of violence. By January 2026, police had identified a person of interest and began piecing together evidence that led them to Gomez and Garcia. Investigators utilised various technologies to trace the couple to Mexico, where they had reportedly been evading authorities for several months.

Compounding the tragedy, it emerged that Gomez had taken her two daughters from prior relationships with her when she fled the United States. These children had been reported missing from Dinuba earlier in the year. Presently, they remain in the custody of Mexico’s National System for Integral Family Development, as their relatives work towards bringing them back home safely.

Upon their return to California, both Gomez and Garcia were initially housed at Santa Rita Jail in Alameda County before being moved to Fresno County Jail. A criminal complaint against them includes charges of first-degree murder with malice aforethought, signalling the seriousness with which authorities regard the evidence against them.

Bernardi was widely known in his community, having worked in career technical education for the Clovis Unified School District. He had a passion for theatre, music, and the arts and was regarded as an experienced stagehand and sound technician. His obituary described him as “happy and thriving” in a job he loved, surrounded by people who cared deeply for him.

The case continues to unfold, and both defendants currently face a bail set at a staggering $1 million each. As the legal processes commence, the community mourns the loss of a life cut tragically short, while questions linger regarding the motives behind such a brutal act.
