Emma Bunton, best known as Baby Spice from the iconic pop group the Spice Girls, recently shared an amusing anecdote regarding her trademark platform shoes during an appearance on the ‘Holly Willoughby Together’ show. Her revelations provide a glimpse into how she initially struggled to meet the height requirement for the group and how this led to her distinctive fashion statement.

During her audition, Bunton, who stands at approximately 5 feet 1 inch tall, learned that she needed to be at least 5 feet 3 inches to join the existing members of the Spice Girls. “I was last,” the now 50-year-old singer recalled, acknowledging her concerns about her height in the competitive environment of girl group auditions.

Determined not to let her stature hinder her chances, Bunton set out to find the perfect solution. “I thought, ‘Where do I get big shoes from?’” she explained, recounting how she opted for a pair of sneakers from the brand Buffalo that would add a few crucial inches to her height. This creative choice would lead to the formation of her iconic Baby Spice look, which she sported not only during performances but also on red carpets throughout her career.
Reflecting on her experiences in the platform shoes, Bunton noted that they were manageable at first, but became increasingly challenging as the demands of touring took their toll. “When I first started dancing in those, it was really easy. Didn’t think anything of it,” she revealed. However, she admitted that the fatigue from constant travel made staying balanced in the shoes much more difficult. “You are literally trying to stay up on stilts,” she commented.
Bunton’s time in the high platform shoes was not without its mishaps. She recalled an embarrassing moment at the MTV Music Awards when she stumbled while performing in front of none other than Madonna. “I remember looking out to the crowd, and Madonna was watching us,” she said, laughing at the recollection of falling over moments after spotting the legendary pop star in the audience.
The Spice Girls, which included other notable members such as Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell-Horner, and Melanie Chisholm, became synonymous with both their catchy tunes and their distinct fashion statements. While each member had their own personal style, Beckham shared in a recent documentary that she was particularly passionate about fashion amidst a group that wasn’t as focused on it. “I had never ever owned a designer garment before, and so this was so new and so exciting,” she reflected, indicating that her love for fashion allowed her to make the most of the resources available.
As the group celebrated the 30-year anniversary of their famous “Wannabe” music video earlier this year, Bunton and her bandmates expressed gratitude for the lasting impact of their music. “To see ‘Wannabe’ still bringing people together and reaching a whole new generation is more than we could have ever dreamed,” they stated in a heartfelt Instagram post marking the milestone.
Despite their occasional wardrobe struggles, the Spice Girls carved out a legacy that was not only musically influential but also significant in shaping fashion trends of the 1990s. With their unique styles and memorable performances, the group continues to resonate with fans and remains a beloved part of pop culture history.
As Bunton’s story highlights, the journey to stardom often involves navigating personal challenges with creativity and humour, traits that the Spice Girls embodied throughout their career. Whether through their music or fashion, they not only redefined what it meant to be a girl group but also forged a path for future generations of female artists.
