Hollywood star Sandra Bullock recently took part in an episode of SiriusXM’s SmartLess podcast, where she shared insights into her personal journey, particularly regarding her health and well-being following the death of her partner, Bryan Randall. The actress, who has not graced the silver screen since 2022, expressed a newfound appreciation for life as she prepares for the release of her upcoming film, *Practical Magic 2*.

In August 2023, Bullock faced the heartbreaking loss of Randall, who passed away at the age of 57 after a private three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Reflecting on her relationship with Randall, she revealed that she had cared for him during his illness, making significant sacrifices along the way. Since then, Sandra emphasised the importance of self-care, stating, “I didn’t take care of myself then, but I so take care of myself now.”
Bullock reflected on her experiences since Randall’s passing and the personal growth she has undergone during this challenging time. She recalled a meaningful gift from her sister—a pewter box engraved with a quote from Leonardo da Vinci. This quote, in which the great artist expressed his belief in the lifelong capacity to learn, resonated with her. Bullock shared, “I have such happiness in my chest,” indicating that she feels an invigorated sense of childlike wonder about life that she hadn’t experienced in the past.
As she navigated through her grief, Bullock discussed the importance of support systems, including her therapist, and the profound love she feels for her two adopted children, Louis and Laila. The actress acknowledged that while there are moments of frustration, she strives to maintain a positive outlook, crediting her focus on self-care as key to her recovery. “I did usher out Brian the way a human being deserves to be ushered out,” she noted, reflecting on her role as a caregiver.
During the podcast, Bullock also opened up about her personal health struggles, explaining how she contracted COVID-19 prior to Randall’s death. While managing her illness, she still took on the responsibility of preparing meals for the nurses who cared for him. This experience heightened her awareness of the stress she was under and led her to consider her own well-being more seriously.
“I remember being at the doctor and she sees me coming in all amped up and bubble wrapped,” Bullock recounted, revealing her anxiety over her health. This prompted a promise to herself that she would prioritise her self-care moving forward. To her relief, her doctor confirmed she was healthy, which Bullock described as a “new lease on life,” emphasising the necessity of looking after oneself.
As Bullock prepares for the launch of *Practical Magic 2*, where she reunites with co-star Nicole Kidman, she is excited to return to the iconic role of Sally Owens. The sequel to the beloved 1998 film, which centres around the trials of two sister witches in Massachusetts, is set for release on 10 September 2023. The film aims to explore family dynamics while confronting the age-old curse that affects the men in their lives.
In the upcoming film, original cast members Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest will reprise their roles, alongside a new ensemble that includes Joey King, Maisie Williams, Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod. Bullock’s return to acting marks a significant moment for the actress, who has spent the past years focusing on her family and personal health.
As anticipation builds for the sequel, Bullock’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-care in the face of adversity. Her ability to emerge with renewed gratitude and appreciation for life’s moments suggests a hopeful future, both for herself and her fans. With *Practical Magic 2*, Bullock is set to enchant audiences once again, intertwining her personal experiences with the magic of storytelling.
