A’Tavia Tatiana, a 28-year-old social media manager, has opened up about her challenging year in Amsterdam, revealing how her dreams turned into a struggle for survival. After several years of living abroad, A’Tavia moved to the Dutch capital hoping to enhance her life. However, she quickly found herself in a dire financial situation, reliant on friends and strangers for shelter and battling to manage her diminishing savings.

In a candid interview, A’Tavia recounted the rapid deterioration of her circumstances after relocating to Amsterdam. What began as a hopeful new beginning saw her moving homes nine times in just over a year, often looking for temporary accommodation amongst those she had befriended. The relentless pressure of financial instability meant that she frequently maxed out her credit cards just to purchase essentials like groceries.
“My debt felt like a burden I had been carrying with me from country to country,” A’Tavia stated. Despite her initial financial security, she soon found herself facing a series of setbacks that drained her budget. After months of unsuccessful job hunting and the burden of accumulating credit card debt, she faced a stark choice between essentials—whether to pay for transportation to seek work or to buy food.
By the time A’Tavia returned to the United States, she found herself grappling with over $24,000 in credit card debt, in addition to $20,000 in student loans and various other financial obligations. This distressing situation only worsened, with international fees and interest compounding her responsibilities during her desperate attempt to make ends meet.
For A’Tavia, credit cards had never been intended to fund an extravagant lifestyle. Coming from a low-income background, they were simply meant to provide a safety net when she was between jobs or in need of critical supplies. “In every place I lived, I had credit cards ready for emergencies. But soon, my daily life became an emergency,” she explained.
Upon arriving back in the U.S., A’Tavia found herself without a stable job, housing, or transportation. The accumulating bills led to relentless contact from debt collectors, leaving her feeling overwhelmed. Faced with mounting pressure, she began to consider filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. “At that point, it felt like the moment of truth,” she recalled.
Unlike in previous years, the timing for A’Tavia to embrace bankruptcy felt optimal. With no assets tying her down—having no car, home, or immediate employment—she viewed this significant financial decision as an opportunity for a fresh start rather than simply an end. However, she did not rush into the decision. Instead, she spent months researching the process, ultimately deciding to file without legal assistance, known as filing pro se, with the help of Upsolve, a nonprofit organisation.
Despite feeling trepidation about the decision, A’Tavia was surprised by the efficiency of the bankruptcy process. “I felt no shame about it, but there was a lot of fear,” she admitted. Her case was resolved rather quickly, with just one virtual court hearing leading to her discharge in April 2025 after officially filing in January.
Now, just over a year since her bankruptcy was finalized, A’Tavia has rebuilt her life in Dallas. She has secured an apartment, purchased a car, and has even been able to obtain two new credit cards to help re-establish her financial standing. “Within a year, I’ve gotten everything back,” she proudly shared on social media.
Having shared her journey on platforms like TikTok, A’Tavia has garnered questions and messages from those seeking guidance on similar financial struggles. She expressed her hope that her openness about her experience might encourage others to distinguish their financial hardships from their self-worth. “I’d tell them they deserve a fresh start. Do research, have a plan, and allow yourself a second chance,” she advised.
Through her resilience, A’Tavia Tatiana serves as an example of how setbacks can lead to new beginnings, reminding others that financial recovery is achievable even from the most daunting circumstances.
