Authorities in Oregon are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains alongside a vehicle linked to two men who have been missing since September 2022. The remains are believed to belong to 67-year-old Eddie Hair and 68-year-old Scott Smith, although this has yet to be confirmed through official identification.
The two friends set off on a trip in a red 2005 Jeep Wrangler, intending to explore the scenic landscapes of Tillamook County. They were last reported to be preparing for an outdoor expedition that involved camping and possibly searching for rare rocks. Their absence raised alarms when they did not return, prompting concerns from family and friends who described the situation as “unusual and concerning.”

The last known activity from their mobile phones occurred on September 23, 2022, and no transactions have been recorded on their bank accounts since that date. Hair’s former partner, Katrina Pickle, indicated that both men were on medication for health issues and had departed without their necessary prescriptions, camping equipment, or adequate clothing for cold weather.
On August 14, loggers working in the Jones Creek area, situated off Highway 6, uncovered the vehicle associated with Hair and Smith. Following the discovery of the red Jeep, investigators also found human skeletal remains in the vicinity, leading them to believe that these may be connected to the missing adult men.
The Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement indicating that the vehicle showed signs consistent with a motor vehicle accident, as it had sustained considerable damage and debris was scattered around the area. Officials stated that the vehicle had come to rest against some trees, which further supports the theory of a crash.
As the investigation progresses, the authorities are collaborating with forensic teams to confirm the identities of the remains and piece together the circumstances of the incident. The police have emphasised the importance of thorough examination in making any determinations regarding the identity of the deceased.
Despite the troubling findings, representatives from the sheriff’s office have stated that no further information is available at this time. The absence of any new details continues to leave family and friends of Hair and Smith in a state of uncertainty and concern.
In the wake of their disappearance, community members have expressed their anguish and hope for some closure in this distressing case. As search efforts and investigations continue, family members remain hopeful for answers about what happened to the two men and are waiting for the official identification process to be completed.
Both Eddie Hair and Scott Smith are remembered fondly by those who knew them. Their friends and family await further developments, as they seek to understand the fate of the two men who vanished nearly a year ago while pursuing their love of the outdoors.
