The study began with a single treatment involving 36 capsules taken over several hours. Remarkably, four months later, three participants showed an increased tolerance for nuts during follow-up tests. In subsequent trials, an additional five participants were treated with antibiotics prior to taking the capsules. This modification aimed to prevent their own gut bacteria from interfering with the beneficial gut flora provided by the capsules.

Dr. Talal Chatila, who directs translational immunology at Boston Children’s Hospital, explained the underlying science. He noted that food allergies often stem from a breakdown in oral tolerance—the immune system’s ability to accept the intake of food. “The right bacteria can help restore that process, working through bile acid metabolites to promote the immune cells that enforce tolerance,” he remarked. This understanding opens the possibility of optimising therapies for better outcomes in managing food allergies.
Nut allergies are among the most prevalent food allergies globally, affecting approximately 4.6 million adults in the United States and 2.2% of children, according to data from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The Mayo Clinic describes anaphylaxis as a potentially fatal condition, where the immune system releases a rush of chemicals that can lead to shock, narrowing of the airways, and breathing difficulties.
While the research is still in early stages, the implications are vast for those burdened by nut allergies.
