In a dramatic turn of events, one mother experienced an unexpected and rapid delivery of her son just moments after arriving at the hospital. Katie Rakes and her husband, Kyle Bruns, found themselves unprepared for the swift arrival of their second child, Arlo, who was born five weeks ahead of his due date.

The couple, hailing from Maine, checked into the hospital in the middle of the night, feeling a mix of nerves and apprehension regarding the early birth. Expecting a more traditional delivery process, they were shocked when Arlo insisted on making his entrance before they had even completed the check-in procedures.

Rakes recounts the rushed experience, stating, “We pulled up to the emergency department, and Kyle shouted to security, ‘She’s in labour.’” With the assistance of a security guard, she was wheeled in, and the reality of the situation began to dawn on her. “I was at the reception desk for about 30 seconds before something felt off,” Rakes explained.
As they reached the desk, the receptionist greeted them with a smile, prompting Rakes to casually remark that she was there to give birth. In hindsight, she acknowledges that she perhaps should have exhibited more urgency in conveying the gravity of her situation. Before Kyle could return from parking the car, Rakes felt an unmistakable signal that Arlo was about to arrive.
“The moment Kyle stood beside me, I could feel the baby coming out,” she recalled. With Arlo born at just 35 weeks gestation, he weighed in at a healthy 6 pounds. Overwhelmed by the suddenness of the situation, Rakes described a surge of adrenaline as she looked down to see the head of her son emerging.
“Without me consciously trying, my body was pushing the baby out,” she said. Realising the urgency, she turned to her husband and stated, “Honey…the baby, the baby is coming out.” Thankfully, the attending security guard quickly summoned a nurse who was stationed nearby. By the time assistance arrived, Arlo was making his appearance.
Despite the unexpected circumstances, Rakes expressed pride in her husband’s responsiveness. “In that moment, Kyle was determined to help deliver our son,” she shared. His instincts kicked in, eliminating any hesitation he might have felt. “He never thought about being a bystander,” Rakes added. Kyle’s calm nature and presence of mind undoubtedly played a critical role in this extraordinary moment.
As soon as Arlo was delivered, Rakes turned to the receptionist, who appeared taken aback by the unfolding events. “I apologised profusely to her,” she recalled, acknowledging the surprise of witnessing a delivery in such close quarters. The medical staff acted quickly, wrapping the newborn in a warm blanket and ensuring he was cared for, which included checking his lungs and monitoring him for slight jaundice.
After the whirlwind of the delivery, Rakes expressed her gratitude towards the care they received. “The medical team was incredibly considerate and respectful,” she remarked, noting that they had been able to leave the hospital just a few days after Arlo’s birth. The family spent quality time at the hospital, receiving guidance and support as they adjusted to their growing family.
Initially, Rakes and Bruns considered sharing the footage of Arlo’s birth only with friends and family, as the surprising nature of the event led to amused disbelief among their loved ones. They decided to post the video on TikTok to mark Arlo’s first birthday, not anticipating the virality it would achieve.
Twelve months later, Rakes described her astonishment at the widespread reaction to their video. “We had an idea it would be seen, but not to the extent that it has,” she reflected. The couple’s experience has resonated with many in the online community, drawing attention not only to their story but to the unpredictability of childbirth.
In sharing their journey, Rakes hopes to shed light on the realities of premature births and the unanticipated moments that can arise during parenthood. She remains grateful for the swift response of those around them during a life-changing event that unfolded in the most unexpected of ways.
